AP Interview: Jia Zhangke plans virtual reality romance

85-2Critically acclaimed Chinese director Jia Zhangke says he will make a virtual reality film next year with a romantic story as he and viewers get used to the new medium, and declared: "I think VR is going to be the next big thing."

The director, better known for films that depict China's social changes and acts of violence, told The Associated Press that the short film would be a gentle romance as "it takes time for people to feel comfortable" in virtual reality.

"The speed and direction of movements may make people feel physically uncomfortable, so we're starting with a romantic story," he said in an interview.

"In the past, the audience could only imagine the world inside and outside the frame," he said. "VR liberates an audience and allows people to independently choose what we want to be concerned with. Audiences become more important."

Israeli military and VR simulations

“Virtual reality can simulate a battlefield, and generate scenarios where [pilots] are attacked,” he said. “I can use the Internet of things to link up a battalion commander in my sector to someone sitting an [air force] control center,” he added. Virtual reality might also be used to train technicians on how to service the F-35 fifth generation fighter jets, due to enter service this year.

Such breakthroughs could change “the way I attack, or look at the whole area and communicate with gestures,” Cohen said. “We are looking at how we can take these things to our world of command in the IAF.”

WATCH: Wild Atlantic Way virtual reality and 360° videos open to the public

A number of activities (such as surfing under the Cliffs of Moher, sea stack climbing and beach horse riding) are now all available on virtual reality apps - including LittleStar and Samsung Milk VR.

The experiences can also be viewed in 360° videos, which allow viewers to tap, click or drag the video to change their viewing angle.

While each signature point on the Wild Atlantic Way map can also now be viewed from an overhead satellite, and rotated with a mouse or keyboard.

The VR and 360° experiences were filmed earlier this year using a combination of drone, custom built mounted back packs, and go-pro equipment.

Fáilte Ireland also plans to integrate VR experiences and 360° views across their tourist office network.

VR Playhouse: Bringing Psychedelic Consciousness to 360 Video

Christina Heller is the co-founder and CEO of VR Playhouse, and she gave a talk with her co-founder Ian Forester at SVVR 2016 titled “How Fantasy Becomes Form” about the process of starting up a 360-degree video production studio. I had a chance to catch up with Christina at SVVR to talk about some of her main points, as well as talk about how VR Playhouse wants to bring a psychedelic consciousness to VR in order to potentially activate dormant portions of our brain and ultimately enable us to bring more liberation into our every day lives. We discuss some of these larger visions of VR, what Burning Man has to teach VR, her favorite narrative VR experiences, and the future of interactive storytelling within VR.

VR motion sickness alleviated with field of view alterations

640_117634_webThe approach changes the FOV in a way that many participants found imperceptible. "I was aware of work on change blindness--a concept in perceptual psychology that explains why people sometimes do not notice what would seem to be an obvious change in a scene," explains Fernandes, who himself has suffered from VR sickness. "So I wondered if this could be applied to VR: could we change a participant's FOV without them noticing?"

The team specifically targeted scenarios in which users move in the virtual environment in a way that intentionally differs from how they move in the real world.

These include games in which they are physically standing or sitting on a couch in their living room, while walking, running, driving, or flying in the virtual world.

Most of the participants who used the more subtle restrictors did not notice them, and all those who did notice them said they would prefer to have them in future VR experiences.

6 of the Hottest Virtual Reality Companies Out There

In order to find the hottest virtual/augmented reality companies out there, we started with a chart from our friends at CB Insights that shows who the biggest players are when it comes to investing in AR/VR startups. We took the top-5 investors in this space and then had one of our on-staff PHDs come up with a sophisticated algorithm to determine which companies are the hottest as seen below:
