The Godfathers Of Film Take On 3-D*

Scorsese, Coppola and Spielberg are coming out with 3-D movies—just as audiences are showing less interest in the pricey format

Three-D technology is at a critical juncture in Hollywood, its mixed track record leaving few clues as to whether it will be a transformative leap like talkies or color, a limited platform like Imax or little more than a doomed gimmick like Smell-O-Vision or Sensurround.

This fall, however, three godfathers of American cinema—Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Mr. Coppola—are releasing their first 3-D films. If their movies fall short, skepticism about the format could continue to spike. Or 3-D could clear an important hurdle—respectability.

History of 3D – illustrated timeline

Whether you love them or walk out of a movie theater with a headache, Hollywood has been pushing 3D films on moviegoers for the last several years. In fact, in 2010 three of the four largest grossing films were in 3D. With that kind of money there’s no doubt that the 3D fad probably is here to stay. Further proof of this are TVs with 3D capability currently on the market. However, 3D is anything of a new technology, if you grew up in the 80′s you should be able to recall the many horror films that were in 3D. But what’s astonishing is that this technology has been around for well over a century.

Movie theaters screening digital alternatives

Digiplex Destinations, which operates the Bloomfield 8 Theater. “One of the ways to get them busier is to know the audience and play things other than Hollywood movies.” ...

The NCM Fathom programming has included the ballet “Giselle” streamed in 3-D from Russia, four William Shakespeare plays streamed from London’s Globe Theatre, an opera series including “Madame Butterfly” from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, and live sporting events in 3-D such as soccer’s World Cup and the Wimbeldon tennis finals.

“It was a challenge to generate awareness for this type of programming,” said Michelle Portillo, NCM Fathom spokeswoman. “People are catching on finally.”  ...

“People are surprised they can see something for $18 that would cost them $60-70 to see in New York,” plus the travel cost, Corcoran said.  ...

“The economics of running alternative content has gotten to the point where the concept is going to get a lot bigger,” Devine said. “It is beyond its infancy, and it has a lot of room to grow.”  ...

Bloomfield 8 is particularly searching for the older audience underserved by Hollywood movies. The theater started dedicating one screen for independent film and is finding new programming for that crowd, Mayo said.  ...

For screenings of sporting events, Rave Motion Pictures offers food stands at its locations, much like the food carts at sports stadiums. The idea is to give fans the same experience as a game. Mayo wants to get permits to allow fans to tailgate outsideBloomfield 8.  ...

3D Shaken, Not Stirred (Editorial on 3D from the informed gamer perspective)

It seems that 3D has been making the headlines for all the wrong reasons again!  On one hand, 3D is giving people headaches.  On the other, products are getting pulled from store shelves due to customer complaints.  Watching the stock prices, you’d think that Chicken Little in 3D had come to life, and the sky was falling!  I’d like to take this opportunity to put things in perspective, because 3D isn’t to blame for the world’s ills. …

3D interactive journey into the Great Pyramid (2D, anaglyph, and side-by-side formats)

An interactive 3D film about a theory of the construction of the Great Pyramid of Khufu in Egypt, first presented to the public in a 3D theatre in Paris, has now migrated on to the home desktop.

To watch the film, one has to simply download a plug-in and don a pair of 3D glasses – although the software gives the sensation of depth without them too, to a lesser extent.

Children Need High-Tech Vision to Thrive in Today’s Classrooms

[Philip Lelyveld comment: this is the first mainstream article I've seen with specific advice to parents.]

[Excerpt]

...  "Children who have even a small vision misalignment or those who lack equal vision in both eyes may not be able to perceive 3D images properly," explains Dr. Carl Hillier of the California Optometric Association. "Watching 3D imagery, which creates the illusion of depth by presenting each eye with a slightly different image, can unmask ulterior issues such as lazy eye, convergence insufficiency, poor focusing skills and other visual problems students might not have previously known existed." ...  These conditions often manifest in poor reading ability and performance in sports as well as low self-esteem; all problems that could follow a child throughout life. ...

Early detection and treatment are critical in correcting vision problems and helping students reach their highest potential, but how is a parent to know? Look for these five warning signs that your child may be part of the 25% who will be at a disadvantage in the classroom this year.

  • Returns from seeing a 3D movie feeling dizzy, nauseous or with a headache; or child doesn't see a difference between 2D and 3D images
  • Trouble hitting or catching a ball
  • Clumsy, often bumping into things
  • Frequently loses place when reading or uses a finger to follow words
  • Discomfort and avoidance of reading and 3D viewing

Mercedes-Benz Working On 3D Displays And Hand-Gesture Recognition

… Already previewed in the recently revealed2011 Mercedes-Benz Concept A-Class, display screens with 3D capabilities will depict differently arranged navigation levels. The driver is guided intuitively around the spatial depth of this menu structure by flowing movements and fluidly animated transitions.

Further examples of this natural style of interaction include menu control via gestures or handwriting recognition, whereby the user traces a finger over the display on the head unit just like in the Audi A8. …
