Jane’s Addiction on the confluence of music and technology (Q+A)

Indeed, 3D was the key gimmick at the event, with random individuals selected to hold a Thrill 4G and tape the concert in 3D. LG will later take the footage shot and splice together what it bills as the first 3D user-generated concert. It's unclear, however, how much the fans participated in the content generation; staffers near the stage and behind it shot the concert with the Thrill using special gear,...

Web video faces big obstacles in vaulting to 3D

Net Element wants to be ready for the day when 3D videos on the Web are as common as cute kittens on YouTube.  ...  The young company is an innovator in the online video space, and [Richard] Lappenbusch - a former Microsoft executive who was hired as president in February - says he can pull that off in Miami, though the city is far from a front-runner in technology or film.  ...  That includes sticking 3D cameras on Formula 1 cars for its Motorsport.com website, a video hub for racing fans. And letting independent filmmakers upload 3D movies to its newly acquired, James Caan-endorsed OpenFilm.com, which has more than 8,000 videos submitted from Spielbergs-in-training. ... To further add to the 3D fervor, Net Element is in the process of organizing a 3D film festival in Miami this winter.  ....

Apple Files 3D Display Patent

Apple's 3D approach will not be a trick on your eyes, but an actual physical effect that is delivered via three individual displays that are stacked on top of each other.

A recently published patent filing reveals that Apple envisions two transparent OLEDs as well as a background LCD to be used for a 3D display that can deliver limited depth by separating content. At least one processor will be used to control the separation and the interaction of content, while the patent describes a scenario in which one GPU is controlling all displays and another in which individual GPUs are tied to individual displays.

The desired effect is more depth to elements on a screen. Apple notes that such 3D display devices can include everything from desktop displays to portable devices, which we imagine could also include the iPad. This thought is especially interesting since we have heard a wave of rumors that the next iPad could integrate a 3D display. With this patent application we think a 3D iPad is entirely possible, especially since this patent was filed already back in January of 2010.

Robotic surgery gains popularity

The growing popularity of this pricey equipment — which can cost more than $2 million, according to some estimates — has sparked a debate on the merits and risks of robotic surgery.

Both local hospital systems now have surgical robots in an effort, hospital officials say, to provide minimally invasive surgery that shortens patients' hospital stays. ...

Surgeons who use the robots say the technology allows patients to recover quicker because they lose less blood — less than a tablespoon, in some cases — and the incisions are smaller, sometimes less than half an inch.

...

The robots are controlled solely by the surgeon, who sits at a nearby console and views the surgery through a viewfinder, where the images are magnified 10 times and appear in 3D.

...

3D technology comes to classrooms

"What we do is we created 3D classrooms and 3D content for schools, businesses," says Stewart Rodeheaver, president of ViziTech USA.

They began teaching for the military and it expanded from there.

"Soldiers would go home and tell their families that they dissected a tank in 3D that day and I started getting calls from the families saying 'I'm a biology teacher what can you do for me'," says Rodeheaver.

He says the more 3D technology is used to teach students, the higher their learning rate is.

"We have studies now that show we can raise test scores by as much as 30% per class room," says Rodeheaver.

An average school package would include the machine, twenty-five 3D glasses, 3D projector, and math, science, and interactive libraries.

That package sells for about $12,000.

Sony’s 3D re-vision

Today Hocking is busier than ever with an increasingly senior position at Sony Computer Entertainment. He’s now managing Sony London Studios as well as the renowned North West division, while also helping with an academic program that runs right across Europe, on top of training up ‘3D game evangelists’ in-house.

And if that wasn’t enough to make his diary look impossible, he’s also put together a 3D post-mortem speech for the Develop Conference, held this week in Brighton. The keynote will discuss lessons Sony has learnt from 3D gaming in the past year, so consider our interview below a preview of what to expect.
