Holographic Nanoscale Microscopy Allows Watching Living Cells in 3D

Real time observation, of living cells, in 3D, and at the nanoscale - this are the incredible and groundbreaking features of a new holographic microscopy prototype developed by two young scientists at the Swiss Technology University EPFL.

In the world of microscopy, "this advance is almost comparable to the leap from photography to live television." Going beyond conventional microscopes by using a low-intensity laser for scanning combined with advanced computational image processing, it can acquire images of living cells in just a minute (and becoming much faster still as it is further developed) at a resolution of less than 100 nanometers — without using contrast dyes or fluorescents, to avoid distortion by the presence of foreign substances.

Being able to capture a living cell from every angle like this lays the groundwork for a whole new field of investigation. “We can observe in real time the reaction of a cell that is subjected to any kind of stimulus,” explains researcher Yann Cotte.

What a model train project can teach us about the future of 3D scanning and printing

“The hobbyists have established a startup called The Flexiscale Company, which launched a Kickstarter project on Monday that aims to fund the production of model kits for several old and very obscure locomotives,” writes GigaOM.

With that data, Thorpe was able to send it to French 3D-printing firm Sculpteo to make a 1:25-scale model of Winifred.

But Thorpe also wanted to recreate part of Winifred on a 1:1 scale. “To test whether this would work, he sent the data for the door latch to Shapeways, which returned a copy in stainless steel: effectively a spare part for a vehicle that’s more than 120 years old, complete with the patina gained by the original part over the years, with 1mm accuracy,” reports GigaOM.

Sky to broadcast final Formula One test in 3D

"3D will show us the real challenges of the race track with added depth and perspective. It will be a new, immersive experience for viewers and I can't wait to see what F1 action in 3D will reveal."

3D cameras have been used at Formula One races in the past but the footage has not been broadcast live.

Studios revisit strategy for 3D catalogue re-issues in cinemas

The future of re-releasing catalogue titles in 3D theatrically has grown more uncertain following a series of cancellations and postponements of scheduled 3D re-releases by the major studios. The change in strategy is primarily linked to a series of lacklustre results for recent catalogue re-issues at the box office in the 2012 calendar alongside a potential risk of eroding some of the value of legacy franchises or studio 'crown jewels' unnecessarily through a theatrical re-release.

Guernica in 3D – University of Georgia

[Philip Lelyveld comment: I am often skeptical of recreations of art masterpieces in another medium, but this one does justice to the original and adds levels of interpretation to it.]

“The object of a cubist painting is to invoke reassembly of the scene in the viewer’s mind. This video both enacts that reassembly and even does a further dissection of the scene. It literally puts us in the picture.” University of Georgia

3D printing is more than just a gimmick

I'd like to believe that soon enough this is what 3D printing will become and be recognised for. Not its ability to print out a lampshade or custom-designed furniture, but its power to inspire people to revolutionise technology and enable the rapid development of manufacturing industries in countries that desperately need to catch up with the developed world.

Mogilev to get copy of Saint Euphrosyne Cross

A holographic copy of the Cross of Euphrosyne of Polotsk will be made for Mogilev. The collective image of the relic will go back to the place where the original, made by Lazar Bogsha in 1161, was kept from 1929 until the Great Patriotic War,...

The holographic copy is made from the relic reconstructed by Brest craftsman Nikolai Kuzmich as the whereabouts of the original is still unknown, the director explained. The holography will be displayed at the restored strong room of the museum. The exposition will be held under the name “The Secret of the Cross”. “In fact it is going to be a new word in the museum technology, what will allow us to see the relic in 3D image,” Alexander Khokhryakov added.
