Rating Nintendo 3DS’ Baked-In Freebies

Nintendo 3DS arrives in the United States this Sunday bearing gifts. While the new glasses-free 3-D gaming platform doesn't include a packed-in game, the handheld does come with a variety of apps baked into its memory.

We've already reviewed the 3DS hardware elsewhere on Wired.com, but the volume of features, games and applications that come with the $250 gaming gadget is so great that we're taking a deeper dive into its capabilities.

Read all about them in the lengthy, entertaining article here.

3-D Models Created by a Cell Phone

Capturing an object in three dimensions needn't require the budget of Avatar. A new cell phone app developed by Microsoft researchers can be sufficient. The software uses overlapping snapshots to build a photo-realistic 3-D model that can be spun around and viewed from any angle.

muvee Device Solutions Group Releases 3D Video Editing Technology for Android

"Consumers who shoot and share video on their mobile phones expect instant gratification," said Terence Swee, CEO, muvee.  "However, editing video has traditionally been a computationally expensive operation, given the large resolution and complex compression used.  By going the way of 3D, this problem doubles.  Using smart technologies like CODEN enable users to be able to quickly edit their 3D videos on device, bypassing the need to transfer to a PC."

Single lens produces 3D microscopic images

[Philip Lelyveld comment: it sounds like the object must be much smaller than the lens, which makes this solution the same has having many camera positions on a small scale.]

A lens that enables microscopic objects to be seen from nine different angles at once to create a 3D image has been invented by engineers at the Ohio State University.

The new lens is the first single, stationary lens to create microscopic 3D images by itself.

Allen Yi, associate professor of integrated systems engineering at Ohio State, and postdoctoral researcher Lei Li, called the lens a proof of concept for manufacturers of microelectronics and medical devices, who currently use very complex machinery to view the tiny components that they assemble.

Mercury In 3D Coming Soon

[Excerpt]

3D images of the closest planet to the Sun
The MESSENGER mission will soon provide us with new images of Mercury: the Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) stereo camera will be imaging almost the entire surface of Mercury in 3D. But we will have to wait for a short time for its first images, "the optics must be protected from the hot environment until the volatile elements that have accumulated on the spacecraft during its years in flight have evaporated," explains Jurgen Oberst from the DLR Institute of Planetary Research, also a member of the MESSENGER Science Team.

Samsung shows off 55-inch glasses-free 3D TV prototype

According toTech-On!, the 55-inch display is able to accomodate nine different viewpoints for glass-free 3D viewing, and it can be switched into a 2D mode at any time, which works by changing the optical refraction index of an LCD panel that sits on top of the main LCD that’s actually used to display images.

Fraunhofer To Unveil Customizable Surgical Tools In Upcoming Trade Show

(Philip Lelyveld comment: this is relevant to 3D animation and consumer products.)

Surgical tools aren’t exactly the kind of topic that gets featured here at Geeky Gadgets. But the news from Fraunhofer, a high tech firm specializing in cutting edge manufacturing processes for various industries, shouldn’t be missed. Fraunhofer have developed laser technology that allows the doctors inside the operating room to create their own tools.

Think of a 3D printer but without the machinery, just a specifc amount of titanium powder that’s melted by laser then molded a layer at a time to fit the unique requirements of the surgical team.
