3-D Printing Revolution Stymied For Now by High Prices

Three-D printers have the potential to spark a revolution of creativity and self-sufficiency.

A price tag alone can delay a revolution.

Two reasons caused regular computer printers to catch on—a development that took more than thirty years: The cost went down far enough that most could afford to buy one and printing shops opened up for those who couldn’t. The same changes are already starting to occur in the world of 3-D printing.

It's also pretty clear that for investors who want to take part in 3-D printing's potential, there are big opportunities. Currently, two stalwarts are splitting the market: 3-D Systems (NYSE:DDD  ) and Stratasys (Nasdaq: SSYS  ) .

Is 3D Systems Great or What?

For every stock out there screaming "buy me," others simply give us a nudge and a nod.

3D Systems is poised to break through the $1,000 price barrier with its printers, a monumental achievement for the industry. It was at that price point that Hewlett-Packard (NYS: HPQ) was able to acquire massive market share for its inkjets.

Meteor Entertainment Exec Mark Long Explains The 3D Virtual Reality Of Oculus Rift And HAWKEN

Meteor Entertainment, the new game publisher that’s bringing Adhesive Games’ free-to-play Mech shooter HAWKEN to gamers this December, is committed to supporting the new Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. The new device, which will launch its development kits this December in the same window of HAWKEN’s 12/12/12 release, promises to bring full stereoscopic 3D gameplay with a huge field of vision—110 degrees diagonally—and overcome the latency problems that have plagued previous VR gaming headsets, where movement in the game lags movement of the head.

Oculus recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to speed the distribution of early development kits to game developers around the world. The link to that campaign is here. The company was founded by veterans of RedOctane, developers of the acclaimed Guitar Hero series, Scaleform, a top user interface software in gaming, and Gaikai, the cloud gaming company.

3D Printing Is A Game Changer: [Sponsored Post]

Hugh Evans is a vice president at T. Rowe Price Associates. He is the lead portfolio manager of the Distribution Management Service, and serves on the Investment Advisory Committee of the Small-Cap Value Fund and Small-Cap Stock Fund.

From my vantage point, 3D printing is right up there as one of the most exciting innovations I've seen in the 20 years I've been around here. I think it's going to change the way goods are manufactured across many industries.

LG shrinks its latest Cinema 3D TV

If your bedroom doesn't have enough space to accommodate a 32-inch TV, LG may just have the solution for you. While the company's new 27-inch TM2792 personal smart TV may be petite, it features many bells and whistles found on it larger counterparts. Besides a smart TV platform with an app store and a full Internet browser, this model also supports the latest LG Magic Remote with a scroll wheel and motion-sensing capabilities.

Another major highlight is native 3D-compatibility using lightweight and inexpensive passive 3D glasses, enabling LG to deliver bright and flicker-free 3D visuals unlike most active shutter 3D TVs.

Holography in ‘Pictures From the Moon’ at New Museum

The show is skewed instead toward well-known artists who used holography and toward works made well after its heyday. But there is no question that holograms aptly demonstrate the quasi-mystical relationship humans have with technology — and photography in particular, which has often been harnessed to represent the supernatural. (Holograms are not unlike 19th-century ghost photography and ectoplasm experiments, and there’s also a wax-museum chilliness to them that conjures a long history of photographing the dead.)

“Pictures From the Moon: Artists’ Holograms 1969-2008” continues through Sept. 30 at the New Museum, 235 Bowery, at Prince Street, Lower East Side; (212) 219-1222,newmuseum.org.
