To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Brave Ticket
Final Verdict: Especially given how solid animated films usually are in 3D, this is a pretty dismal score, and hopefully the families who will flock to Brave this weekend will be able to save themselves the extra cash. Yes, it's sometimes hard to find 2D screenings these days, but it's worth that effort for Brave-- not only will you save the money, but you'll probably be able to actually see what's happening in the movie, an experience I missed out on thanks to the worst 3D Pixar has ever provided.

Neil Finn’s new 3D music video
Over 24 hours the bands heads, arms and legs were filmed individually to create two 3D videos. Now fans get to listen to the songs while playing Dr Frankenstein.
"You can swap our limbs you can put me on top of Sharon, Sharon on top of me, Shaun on top of either one of us,” Finn says.
He suggests playing around with the drummer’s head.

Daughter-in-law keeps John Wayne’s legacy alive
...Something else that made "Hondo" special was it was shot in the fledgling high-tech format of 3D.
"[John Wayne] loved film. He started out in the early days, he actually had small parts in two silent films. So, he really evolved with the film business," Gretchen explained. "He was all about the innovations that would make it better and would make the experience for the film-goer more exciting, so if 3D was the next thing down the line, he wanted to make a 3D movie and he did it with 'Hondo.'"
Gretchen said she expects distributor Paramount Pictures will eventually re-release "Hondo" in 3D when more home theaters have 3D capabilities....

SONY CLAIM 3D GAMING IS ONLY JUST MATURING – SONY E3 ROUND UP
...Almost reiterating their belief in 3D technology, Jim Ryan, The CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said, "I just think that it's something that's now moving into the mature phase." Before continuing, "You only have so much time at these things, and there was an attempt at yesterday's conference to make it shorter - which I thought was excellent.”
He continued, "3D was the new thing two years ago, it's not the new thing anymore - it's just part of the bedrock of content development and publishing,"
However, Ryan also pointed out that the technology should not be forced down everyone’s throats and that the technology needed to be used wisely. He said that the tech would only be used, "Where appropriate, yes. Not where it doesn't make sense, but where appropriate - absolutely." ...

Makerbot SIG at CrashSpace – a hacker space in Culver City
A Los Angeles Makerbot SIG (special interest group) held its monthly meeting at CrashSpace in Culver City yesterday. About 20 people working with 3D printers demonstrated and discussed their modifications and design-work on a dozen devices. Two in the group had Kickstarter funding for their projects, including $125,000 for one new 3D printer prototype development effort.
CrashSpace is a former machine shop that has been repurposed as a hacker space. It is representative of spaces that are appear all around the US and the globe. CrashSpace depends on donations and a membership fee. It also charges by time for the use of their heavy equipment, such as an industrial-quality laser cutter.
Hacker spaces are generally not kid friendly. There are a lot of dangerous tools and sharp objects lying around. But there is an effort to start a kid-friendly hacker space in the Pasadena area.

Fox’s Unconventional Marketing Campaign For Ang Lee’s ‘Life Of Pi’
Last week we reported that exclusive scenes from Ang Lee’s Life of Pi were been shown in front of 3D showings for Fox movies. Prometheus was the first, and more scenes will be shown when Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter hits theaters later this month. Now I am kind of upset at myself for not watchingPrometheus in 3D.
It’s a new strategy for the studio to get audiences interested in the movie. They haven’t even shown a teaser trailer yet. I haven’t heard any reactions to these clips so I can’t make any real judgments. Perhaps it’s because the audience didn’t know what Life of Pi is to begin with.
But as Fox continues to push this new way to market the film, the studio has released a very brief clip from Life of Pi. Check it out below.
In addition to the clip, five new watercolor-like images have emerged online. They debuted on the official Life of Pi website. ...

Some Thoughts On 3D
... I will never shoot stereoscopic. This was said on June 8, 2012 by Rian Johnson whose greatly expected forthcoming sci-fi film “Looper” is going to be released in 2D. ...
The “debate” over 3D has become a polarized polemic, a one-dimensional (sorry) and mind numbingly boring exchange of “3D sucks” “no you suck” back and forths. It gives “film vs. digital” a good run for the title of “discussion I’d most rather chew my own foot off than get sucked into on twitter.” So why am I writing about it? Because even as the debate has (sorry again) flattened, my feelings about stereoscopic photography have grown more complex and nuanced. I’m sure I’m not alone in this. I’m hardly an expert on the topic, technically or otherwise, but I’m setting down my current thoughts just to get them in order, and posting them for anyone who’s interested. If even one foot chewing incident is prevented or delayed, I’ll be happy.
One of the most provocative claims from the pro-3D camp is one I actually agree with, and I’ll sum it up in two closely related statements:
1. 3D is the future of cinema.
2. The introduction of stereoscopic photography is analogous to the introduction of color.
I agree with both of these statements.
I will also never shoot stereoscopic. I actively avoid seeing most stereoscopic movies. Generally speaking, I don’t like stereoscopic photography.
Most of what I’m about to write is concerned with why I don’t consider this a contradiction.
“It’s like seeing a moving sculpture of the actor and it’s almost like a combination of theatre and film … it immerses you in the story more”
That’s Martin Scorsese, waxing eloquent about stereoscopic photography...
I subscribe to Chris Nolan’s recent assertion that calling stereoscopic photography “3D” is a “misnomer.” ...
