3D Printing Community Updates Liberator with Rifle, Pepperbox and Glock-Powered ‘Shuty-9′
[Philip Lelyveld comment: more 3D printer gun designs.]
It’s both a thought experiment and a type of protest: governments can’t control the manufacture of arms, there’s no way to monopolize them.
By turning to 3D printing, Defense Distributed, led by Cody Wilson, the Liberator shows that the ability for the general public to manufacture arms and to share their blueprints is unstoppable.
Of course, the project has been criticized as giving prohibited persons the ability to manufacture arms as well as providing people of countries that forbid gun ownership, in part or in whole, a way to make guns.
Why Google Glass Is Just the Beginning
Software being developed by Atheer Labs could lead to computerized glasses and other wearable devices that let you conduct video conference calls with people as though they were actually in the room with you, navigate a map by moving your head, or play 3-D games that feel truly interactive. And whereasGoogle Glass—for now, at least—is available only on Google’s purpose-built eyewear, founder and CEO Soulaiman Itani says Atheer (a play on “ether”) will roll out its platform with the expectation that it will be built into glasses, smart watches, or other gadgets.

New technology from MIT may enable cheap, color, holographic video displays
Researchers at MIT’s Media Lab have developed a new form of holographic projector that may enable the introduction of practical color 3D holographic video displays as well as higher-resolution 2D displays with lower power consumption. The new projector is built using principles of guided wave optics to construct the spatial light modulator (SLM) that is the heart of digital holography. The MIT holographic projector, which contains an SLM costing US$10 to fabricate, provides 3D images at 30 frames per second (fps) with a resolution similar to that of a standard-definition TV.

ESPN 3D Shutting Down At Year’s End
ESPN is planning to shut down its ESPN 3D channel at year’s end. “Due to limited viewer adoption of 3D services to the home, ESPN is discontinuing ESPN 3D,” explained the company in a statement.
Nobody knows more about sports in 3D than ESPN, and we will be ready to provide the service to fans if or when 3D does take off.”
“I think 3D will evolve when you start seeing some of the TV sets that will be out there that do not have the eyeglass in front of them,...
In May, ESPN cut 300 to 400 jobs through layoffs and by leaving positions unfilled.

World’s first 10.1” glasses-free 3D tablet for 2013
Chinese manufacturer Hampoo has been showing its 10.1” glasses free 3D tablet at last week’s Computex event in Taipei.
3D solutions company DDD has licensed its TriDef 3D Mobile software for the tablets, heading for mass production and an expected release in the third quarter of this year.
This means the HD tablets will be able to automatically convert 2D photos, videos and games into 3D. DDD will receive quarterly royalty revenues from Hampoo based on the volume of 3D tablets shipped.
TriDef 3D Mobile allows over 50 of the latest popular Android mobile games, including “Angry Birds”, “Blood and Glory” and “Cordy”, to be played in stereoscopic 3D ‘off the shelf’, even though the games were not specifically developed for 3D.

3DTV-CON: VISION BEYOND DEPTH
Now in its seventh year, 3DTV-CON comes to Scotland and the UK for the first time. The conference will be chaired by Professor John Watson from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland and Professor Levent Onural of Bilkent University in Turkey.
The 3DTV-CON series aims to bring together researchers and developers from academia and industry with diverse experience and activity in distinct yet complementary areas to discuss the development of next generation 3D broadcast technologies, 3D imaging and measurement, and associated applications. Because of its location in Aberdeen, this is an ideal opportunity to widen the traditional remit of 3DTV-CON into 3D imaging, vision and measurement in the offshore energy community and to showcase the significant activity being undertaken in this sector.
