Curry film students get lessons in 3-D technology
[Philip Lelyveld comment: this is from my home town paper!]
A little piece of Los Angeles took up residence in Milton recently. Jason Goodman, founder and CEO of 21st Century 3D, held a weeklong workshop with students in a digital documentary and movie-making class at Curry College.
Jerry Gibbs, professor and co-chairman of the communications department, stood by as Goodman worked with students on shooting with a large 3-D camera. They began in the studio and then brought the rig outside to the quad, where dancer Rebecca R. Levy performed in front of the lens.
“What I want my students to understand is 3-D is not just a fad this time,” Gibbs said.
Gibbs said the market for 3-D content is expanding. . ...

Ridley Scott: 3D isn’t brain surgery, it’s dead simple
It may surprise some but Prometheus, Ridley Scott's prequel to Alien, has been shot in 3D - his first film to be so. Indeed, some might have even believed the English director was not be a fan of the technology. They'd be wrong.
And having seen around 10-15 minutes of Prometheus during a private screening - being among the first in the world outside studio 20th Century Fox to get the honour - Pocket-lint can say that he's taken to it like a duck to water. Because, as Scott himself told us during a Q&A session afterwards, shooting 3D is "dead simple".
"It's not brain surgery," he said. "It's pretty straight forward. Anybody who says it's going to add six weeks, they don't know what they're doing."
This is partly, Scott explained, down to hiring the right cinematographer. Darius Wolski has previously worked with Ridley's brother Tony, on Crimson Tide and The Fan, and Tim Burton on Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Alice in Wonderland, but it is his work on the Pirates of the Caribbean movie - most notably the last, 3D one - that stood him in good stead to work on Prometheus.
"[He's a] wonderful cameraman," said Scott. "And we used Red cameras, so the quality is superb."
But ultimately, it's was Scott's own direction that determined whether a 3D shot worked or not. Although, even then he took a modest line. ...

First 3D HDTV, Next 3D Printers? The Long Case For 3D Systems (Analyst article)
Have you ever wanted to make a model airplane or car but didn't want to have to assemble all the pieces? Have you ever cracked your phone case and wished you could make a quick replacement? Well thanks to 3D Systems (DDD) you can do that from home. It has a line of 3D scanners and 3D printers for home use or commercial production. In itslatest annual report it notes possible uses could be in schools, by garage entrepreneurs, or even for automotive parts and prosthetics. In addition to providing the printers the company also provides the printing materials and maintenance service on its proprietary systems.
3D Systems just launched the Cube, its first at home 3D printer. It also maintains a website where people can sell their designs to other people. The person could buy the design and print it right there in their own house. It recently acquired Z Corp for a print engine that is capable of printing in full color. It also recently acquired Vidar which gives it contacts into the healthcare industry. During 2011 it also acquired nearly a dozen other companies the each helped offer strategic growth. ...
As this is an emerging technology, anyone can invent a similar process and start a company. While 3D holds or has pending nearly 1,000 patents, it could still be overtaken by a better technology. Stratasys (SSYS) is a close competitor and based on its website, it focuses more towards the larger commercial versions of 3D printers. ...
