VR market ‘more tolerant’ than 3D sector
Gamers willing to wear 'funky' gadgets more than the average consumer, says Oculus inventor
The market for virtual reality has greater tolerance than the 3D market, which has struggled to take off in the home, claims the creator behind Oculus Rift.
Oculus founder Palmer Luckey said that his VR headset won’t suffer from the fate of reluctant consumers because its audience of gamers are more open to wearing bulky entertainment gear.
“It’s a bit of a different market. I’ve always loved 3D too; I’m on of those guys that doesn’t mind wearing glasses while I watch TV. 3D TVs give you an advantage in terms of immersion, you see things in stereo; but they don’t immerse you nearly as much as a VR headset.

Gravy raises $3m to find events based on moods
Gravy, the Leesburg-based developer of a mobile app designed to find events based on a user’s mood, said on Thursday it has raised an additional $3 million in funding, led by Piedmont Investment Advisors.
Gravy, which said it has delivered more than 20 million event discoveries to users of its app last month, said it will use the proceeds to develop new product features and technology enhancements.
The free app, available for iOS and Android devices, lets users select what type of mood they are in – such as “Playtime,” “Classy” and “Lively” –then presents related event options, like museum openings and happy hours.

MPA Launches Mobile App to Boost Reporting of Illegal Camcording in Asia-Pacific
[Philip Lelyveld comment: there is no mention of an incentive to encourage people to use this app! It sounds like something designed by lawyers without a thought toward marketing and adoption.]
Movie theater staff across the Asia-Pacific region are now just several smartphone or tablet taps away from the representatives of their local Motion Picture Association branch whenever they observe cases of illegal video recording in their cinemas.
Using the mobile app, called MAD4 – abbreviated from "Make A Difference” – theater managers and their teams will be able to type in information about camcording incidents through an online reporting platform.

Research shows China may be the best paid content market!
A majority of Chinese internet users say they pay for digital content. That finding is likely a demographic quirk — but may nevertheless mean a welcome market opportunity for vendors.
Kinect component maker to launch compact 3D sensor to fit in smartphones
PrimeSense, which developed the 3D sensing technology used in Microsoft’s Kinect, is set to unveil a compact 3D sensor that can fit into a variety of consumer electronic devices.
The Capri 1.25 embedded 3D sensor is around one-tenth the size of PrimeSense’s current generation of 3D sensors, the Israeli company said Tuesday in a press release. Capri has improved 3D sensing algorithms, it said.
The company will showcase the new sensor at the International CES in January and expects to have samples ready for manufacturers by the middle of 2013.

Notes from HPA Production in the Cloud Luncheon
By Phil Lelyveld
Ken Williams and Phil Lelyveld attended the December 11, 2012 HPA luncheon on production in the cloud. We asked the panelists where they thought the major pain points were in the emerging, non-linear content creation, production, storage, and distribution workflow. Where were there opportunities to gain efficiencies through standardization, without losing flexibility or opportunities for competitive advantage through product-specific features.
Eric Dachs, Pres./CEO of Pix Systems said metadata. He is able to move content and associated metadata together from the camera to the cloud, but the two can become separated. Plus metadata is added, and lost, and sometimes manually re-entered, as the content is processed, stored, and moved.
Dave Scammel, Owner of Sohonet, mentioned connectivity, networks, and bandwidth. Not only do high speed networks need to be available throughout the workflow, but different networks need to interoperate seamlessly so data can be moved among them.
Steve Anastasi, VP Tech Ops at Warner Bros, noted that archiving begins the moment the content is captured. Echoing Eric’s point, he said that standardizing the language of metadata related to capture and processing, as well as metadata describing the content itself, would greatly improve the efficiencies of downstream activities including archiving.
Miles Ward, Solutions Architect at Amazon, pointed out that the language in license agreements that he has seen doesn’t work for the cloud. Legacy content management and security contract terms that are appropriate for physical locations and physical media need to be reworked for the virtual environment of the cloud.
Eric closed with the comment, ‘rather than standardization, let’s agree to a set of operating principles.’
The ETC is holding an organizing meeting of our Production in the Cloud project at USC on December 20th, from noon-2pm.
UltraViolet Gets Surround Sound (DTS)
DTS announced that several content solution providers, including Digital Rapids, Elemental Technologies, and Rovi, now support DTS Express surround sound for creation of content in the UltraViolet Common File Format. DTS Express, part of the DTS-HD family of audio solutions found on many Blu-ray Disc movies, is optimized for digitally delivered content.
