Sony TV Patent Lets Users Watch TV And Play Games Simultaneously
According to the patent description, future SimulView supported television will not just allow two gamers to share a scree, but a third person as well. While two people game, one person can watch TV, all on the same television each viewing their content as though they were watching it on a separate screen. Audio will be transmitted wirelessly through the 3D glasses, so no sounds will conflict. The image attached with the patent (see below) reveals that users will require two PS3′s (one for each gamer), as well as a separate receiver/DVD/Blu-ray player for the person watching television.

A Clock that Will Last Forever
Imagine a clock that will keep perfect time forever, even after the heat-death of the universe. This is the “wow” factor behind a device known as a “space-time crystal,” a four-dimensional crystal that has periodic structure in time as well as space. However, there are also practical and important scientific reasons for constructing a space-time crystal. With such a 4D crystal, scientists would have a new and more effective means by which to study how complex physical properties and behaviors emerge from the collective interactions of large numbers of individual particles, the so-called many-body problem of physics. A space-time crystal could also be used to study phenomena in the quantum world, such as entanglement, in which an action on one particle impacts another particle even if the two particles are separated by vast distances.

World MakerFaire 2012: 3D Printing and Open Hardware – Is this really the Future?
Seventeen-year-old GauravJit Singh is a maker of prosthetic arms. And he's been doing it already for seven years, since he built the first prototype out of straws and yarn, as a sixth grader. Now, a senior at Montgomery High School in New Jersey, and an EMT, GauravJit has created the first EMG controlled hand that allows for individual finger movements using electrical sensors attached to the user's arm. GauravJit believes in doing-it-yourself when it comes to biotechnology.

New designs for new technologies: Cinema innovations inspire architectural alternatives
High Frame Rates
One of the most exciting advancements in cinema is the use of higher frame rates.
3D Audio
Dolby unveiled their Atmos sound system at CinemaCon, and this technology has great potential to improve the cinema experience.
Laser Projection
I recently talked with Peter Ludé about digital projection and future developments.
Interactive and Alternative Content
All of the new auditorium technology makes alternative content a viable and realistic possibility for many venues. In the U.S., the Metropolitan Opera has been the most successful program added to cinemas’ show schedules. Live music and sporting events have also been successful. These events can be projected in 3D, further enhancing the experience.
Convertible Auditorium
One very interesting aspect of 4D and 5D cinema and alternative content is flexibility in the auditorium. ... Exhibitors have been exploring ways to bring more people into their facilities during non-peak hours.

Disney’s Anne Sweeney Discusses Changing Role of ABC, Hulu, YouTube, Mobile Video Growth
The co-chair of Disney Media Networks and president of the Disney/ABC Television Group considers mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones the biggest opportunity for video consumption growth.
Why This Matters: As digital change recharacterizes the idea of television networks, Anne Sweeney urges the industry to embrace the shift, and to intensify its focus on innovation in storytelling, distribution, research, and failure. Speaking at a Royal Television Society conference in London Friday, the Disney executive warned that not taking these approaches could lead the industry to the same fate as the Betamax and cassette tape.

Comcast and NBC Put Money, Marketing Into a Social TV App: Zeebox Lands in the U.S.
[Philip Lelyveld comment; what is 'second screen' and when does it add value are open questions.]
The main point of Zeebox is to see what other people are saying about the show you’re watching, and to soak up other goodies while you watch. Like, say, an explainer for HBO’s byzantine “Game of Thrones.”
But the problem with Zeebox, like every other social TV app, is that it seems designed around a business problem — how can we get people to stay with our shows longer or hang out on our service? — instead of consumer problems.

Facebook and Datalogix are correlating online data with offline purchases; opting out is possible but convoluted
Opting out of Facebook’s latest personal information sharing program, which tracks ad effectiveness, is even more oblique than most of its privacy settings. Users must go to Datalogix, the social network’s partner on the initiative, something users can only learn about by rummaging through Facebook’s help center.
As initially revealed by the Financial Times, Facebook is working with Datalogix to learn which ads work by matching users’ Facebook data with information about their actual purchases, as gleaned from sources like loyalty cards. Datalogix currently has data on about 70 million consumers.
