Twitter dictates third-party app form and function in new API, gives six months to comply

[Philip Lelyveld comment: Twitter moves to control its environment so it is positioned to build its revenue stream.]

Another change: Twitter is putting a limit on the number of API calls that can be made in an hour, making it so anyone that wants real-time analytics has to work closely with the company. Also new, hardware manufacturers will have to clear pre-installed Twitter apps on devices because they are rarely updated, Twitter says.

Useful advise on marketing to aging boomers. 53% of the 65+ are online. 70% of them already have cell phones and computers. Vendors who want to reach an older audience need to switch from bland, boring, and patronizing (do you need help?) messaging to inspiring and optimistic...and helpful.

100,000 DPI Image Pushes Limits of Resolution

... The Singapore-based team, who describe their work in a paper inNature Nanotechnology, created pixels using tiny nanoscale posts, with silver and gold nanodiscs on top. The distance between these structures, and their diameter, sets the colour of light that they reflect. ...

The team has applied for a patent to cover their work, and hopes to commercialise it. Potential uses could include nanoscale watermarks, cryptography, and as a method of packing vast amounts of data onto physical media, like a DVD. As the nanostructures are permanent, the technology could be useful for archiving content for long periods of time.

Patent trolls and horse-powered boats: 8 highlights from Stanford’s IP powwow

[Philip Lelyveld comment: the entire article has the usual Silicon Valley anti-IP spin, but this one particular presentation raises interesting concerns on both sides of the issue.]

We are just beginning to understand who controls social media at work

The now-famous case over a blog that sued an outgoing writer to reclaim his Twitter followers is forcing scholars to think about who owns workplace social media accounts. Professor Zoe Argento explored how to balance the personal character of an account versus the account’s value to a company’s goodwill. The issue is turning into a can of worms not just for the law of trade secret but for employment law too. (See the abstract for Argento’s “Who owns the Social Media Account.”)

Disney Researchers Add Virtual Touch to the Real World

Researchers at Disney have demonstrated a computer interface that changes the way ordinary, everyday objects feel using a weak electric signal fed through a user's entire body.

Revealed at the Siggraph 2012 conference in Los Angeles this weekend, wearable technology modifies a user's tactile perception of the physical world without requiring him to wear special gloves or use a force-feedback device. Sensations can be induced when the wearer touches a computer screen, walls, furniture, plastic or wooden objects, even other people.

"What is really interesting is that it doesn't require the surface of the object being touched to change, so it could prove flexible and perhaps cheap to implement, although I think it's likely at least a decade away from commercialization."

Billboards and TVs Detect Your Face: Advertisers Salivate

To a computer, your face is a set of points and measurements between your features, but to advertisers, these data sets mean lucrative profits and a new way to connect with customers. Facial detection technology is making it feasible to do real-time measurement and analysis of advertisements in the physical world and predict the products you will want to buy, based on who you are or what you look like.  In a world full of cameras and ubiquitous gadgets, there are serious concerns of how far advertisers will take this. From the advertisements outside, to the televisions in your home – this technology will be coming to a screen near you.

As part of Plan UK’s outreach campaign, advertisements played different messages to men and women

Next time you are looking up at a billboard, there’s a chance it may be looking back down at you.  Immersive Labs has developed software for digital billboards which can measure the age range, gender and attention-level of a passer-by, and quantify the effectiveness of an outdoor marketing campaign.
