Does Uncle Sam need a few good gamers?

Sailors-to-be are jumping on a vessel to take control of floods, fires and massive casualties -- all while sitting in a computer lab or on a laptop in their bunks. The recruits say it's akin to playing a few rounds on their Xbox or Playstation; their instructors say they're learning.

Whatever you call it, just don't try to pry it from their hands.

“A lot of my shipmates loved it. We didn’t want to stop playing,” recruit Shaunna Edwards told FoxNews.com. Edwards said the game reminds her of the popular game Fallout 3, where the mission is to protect Washington, D.C., from a nuclear blow in a bleak and distant future.

‘3-D Towers’ of Information Double Data Storage Areal Density

3D DOLPHINS FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN

According to research by Noel Chia Kok Hwee (pictured), Assistant Professor at Singapore’s National Institute of Educaton (NIE), children with severe autism benefit from interactions with dolphins. Hence, he has embarked on a project to re-create these interactions virtually—with a 3D game on Micosoft’s Kinect.

Creating Content for a Networked Culture

The expert panel will examine the impact video games and multiplayer participation have had on storytelling through examples of recent and upcoming film, TV, ARG and video game projects.

The super session is produced in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University and USC.

Henry Jenkins, Provost's Professor of Communication, Journalism and Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California and author of the book, "Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide," moderates.

As Jenkins puts it, transmedia entertainment is entertainment for a networked culture.

Gaming, 3D Virtual Reality Helps Stroke Victims Recover

So it turns out that recovery is easier than you may think from stroke. Stoke is a horrible experience for those that survive that often leaves one debilitated with the loss of sectional motor function. However, a new study published in the leading medical journal dedicated to the subject, states that virtual interaction, such as video games, 3-D movies and such can help trigger the mind to remember motor skills and get back on the road to perceived normalcy.

3-D Models Created by a Cell Phone

Capturing an object in three dimensions needn't require the budget of Avatar. A new cell phone app developed by Microsoft researchers can be sufficient. The software uses overlapping snapshots to build a photo-realistic 3-D model that can be spun around and viewed from any angle.

NAB: Learn About the Future of Storytelling at NAB2011

"Transmedia: Telling the Story Through Narrative Content, Games and Real-World Adventures" brings together creatives and executives to discuss transmedia and the art of immersive entertainment experiences. Coined by media scholar Henry Jenkins, who will moderate this session, “transmedia” is a method of telling a story across multiple platforms and formats.

The panel for “Transmedia” includes Danny Bilson, executive vice president of Core Games for THQ, Jeff Gomez, Starlight Runner Entertainment CEO, Gale Anne Hurd, producer whose credits include “The Terminator” and “Aliens,” Tim Kring, multiplatform storyteller and creator of “Heroes” and Kim Moses, executive producer, director and writer. Henry Jenkins is a professional of communications, journalism and cinematic arts at USC and author of Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide, and over a dozen other titles on media and popular culture.

The session begins Monday, Apr. 11 at 2:30 pm.

Tokyo’s Disneyland Closes Operations and Move Could Weigh on Shares

Disney's (DIS) Disneyland resort in Tokyo has closed down for about 10 days following the natural disaster that shook the country recently.

The theme park has been closed along with Tokyo DisneySea while various safety checks are being carried out.
