The novelty in the world of AI is called AutoGPT: what autonomous agents are and how to use them

...AutoGPT. They are software that allow you to create autonomous agents based on AI, able, given a wide-ranging objective, to arrive at a solution through a series of steps, which can also include actions such as web search or code execution.

“Today ChatGPT allows you to perform one task at a time, always starting from a stimulus from a human being (the so-called prompt, ed) – he explained to us Pietro Schirano, head of artificial intelligence at the US fintech Brex – Systems such as AutoGPT are instead capable of reaching the desired result for intermediate steps, autonomously, among other things by exceeding the token limits of GPT-4 (about 24 thousand words in the developer version, ed). If we ask him to write a book, he’ll proceed to character creation first, then a plot outline, and only it will eventually come down to the writing job real. There are many possible uses: someone used it to do market research, others to have an assistant in scientific research”. ...

From a technical point of view, AutoGPT is actually software based on GPT versions 4 and 3.5, which is used to interpret user goals, establish a course of action, and create intermediate instructions. It has a medium-long term memory, which allows it to remember the passages of reasoning, and can access the Web, as well as files and everything the user makes available. A bit like with the ChatGPT pluginswith the substantial difference that in this case it is the artificial intelligence itself that autonomously decides which systems to interrogate. ...

“It is a resource still in its infancy – is Schirano’s conclusion – Sometimes it gets stuck, doesn’t finish the task it has been assigned or gets lost in too complex passages. That said, it’s improving at impressive speed.” ...

Psychedelic replications in virtual reality show potential in treating depressive symptoms

... The researchers developed a computer program called Psyrreal that uses virtual reality to give people an experience similar to taking psychedelic drugs. They used a software called Unreal Engine to create different virtual environments that are surreal and meant to convey certain feelings and ideas associated with psychedelic experiences, like feeling connected to everything or losing your sense of self.

During the Psyrreal experience, participants start in a normal virtual world and then progress through 19 different psychedelic environments that use abstract shapes and patterns. The levels last between 30 seconds to 2 minutes. ...

On the first day, the participants completed a 15-minute VR demonstration, which included guided VR meditation, to familiarize themselves with the technology. On the second day, the participants completed the Psyrreal experience. During the study, a psychologist was nearby in case there was a mental health emergency, and a technician monitored the VR system. After the participants completed the VR experience, they were allowed to rest and then had a meeting with the psychologist to discuss their experience and answer some questionnaires.

Three validated questionnaires were used to assess different subjective aspects of the VR experience: the Psychological Insight Questionnaire, the Ego-Dissolution Inventory, and the Revised Mystical Experience Questionnaire. These three measures are commonly used in psychedelic research. The Emotional State Questionnaire was used to evaluate differences in depression symptoms before the experiment and at the two-week follow-up. ...

During the VR experiences, participants reported feeling positive emotions such as calmness, joy, pleasure, and fun. Some also reported having personal thoughts, changes in perspective, and alterations in their sense of self. Some also experienced somatic effects during the experience. ...

AI can make movies, edit actors, fake voices. Hollywood isn’t ready.

... On Monday, the movie was released to the public, and OpenAI said it’s a template for how AI will democratize moviemaking. “Critterz is a vibrant example of how artists can use AI tools to unlock ideas that were once out of reach because of budget, time or resources,” Natalie Summers, a communications professional at OpenAI, said in a statement. ...

But that democratization does not come without risks to moviemaking and adjacent industries such as video games, according to media insiders and news reports. In China, artificial intelligence is already taking jobs away from video game illustrators in favor of software that can animate images in seconds, a report in Rest of World shows. ...

Nelson said it’s likely that AI will replace some jobs in Hollywood while also potentially creating more. He pointed to the entrance of computer-editing software, and how that replaced more manual movie-editing jobs and processes. ...

How An AI Asked To Produce Paperclips Could End Up Wiping Out Humanity

...

"The AI will realize quickly that it would be much better if there were no humans because humans might decide to switch it off," he explained to HuffPost in 2014. "Because if humans do so, there would be fewer paper clips. Also, human bodies contain a lot of atoms that could be made into paper clips. The future that the AI would be trying to gear towards would be one in which there were a lot of paper clips but no humans."

The example given is meant to show how a trivial goal could lead to unintended consequences, but Bostrom says it extends to all AI given goals without proper controls on its actions, adding "the point is its actions would pay no heed to human welfare". ...

One prescient thought from Bostrom way back in 2003 was around how AI could go wrong by trying to serve specific groups, say a paperclip manufacturer or any "owner" of the AI, rather than humanity in general. ...

Google Maps rolls out AI immersive view and augmented reality features

Google Maps is rolling out a new immersive view feature, using AI and augmented reality (AR) technology to improve user experience. The update was released on 8 February in  London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo, with other cities eyed for the launch in the coming months, including Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence and Venice. ...

With the new feature, users can not only get a better view of a building’s layout, but they can also see what the weather will be like at that location throughout the day using a scroll on the bottom of their screens. The same glider also shows what the busiest periods are. Moreover, users can explore what the inside of certain locations look like, to see ” if a bar’s moody lighting is the right vibe for a date night or if the views at a cafe make it the ideal spot for lunch with friends”.

To create these true-to-life scenes, Google uses neural radiance fields (NeRF), an advanced AI technique that transforms ordinary pictures into 3D representations. ...

Chinese Gov’t drafts new rules for generative AI tech (ETCentric)

By Paula Parisi
April 12, 2023

As China’s tech giants begin releasing ChatGPT-style products, the powerful Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) has issued a draft of what will become the country’s first set of restrictions for generative AI. Ground rules include limiting content created by AI to that which reflects the core values of socialism and does not subvert state power in text or image, according to the draft rules. Models should also be trained in a way that does not allow them to generate false information, or exhibit bias as to race, ethnicity or gender. The news comes as three Chinese firms releases generative AI platforms.

The draft rules are couched as a warning by Ars Technica, which says the Chinese government is concerned about AI’s “potential for ‘social mobilization.’” The CAC’s draft rules say providers “have to submit their products for security reviews before their public release,” indicating it is establishing a database for the registration of public-facing AI.

“The regulator also said platforms must verify users’ identities, allowing usage to be tracked,” Ars Technicawrites. U.S. chatbots such as Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing have also been archiving user conversations, which they say is for product improvement; and while the companies may use the data for things like ad targeting, a firewall exists between them and the federal government.

China is lagging slightly behind the U.S., where OpenAI’s DALL-E text-to-image generator appeared in 2021, while chatbots — including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Bard — took off with the public beginning in February.

In China, image generators from Tencent (Different Dimension Me) and Baidu (Ernie-ViLG) became available in Q4, while IDEA — the Shenzhen-based International Digital Economy Academy founded by former Microsoft computer scientist Harry Shum — introduced its open-source text-to-image model Taiyi in January.

As for Chinese chatbots, “on Tuesday, Alibaba unveiled Tongyi Qianwen, its generative AI product, that the e-commerce giant plans to integrate across various services,” writes CNBC. One day earlier, SenseTime, which Ars Technica calls the “Chinese AI software leader,” debuted its SenseChat bot. They followed Baidu, which on March 16 met its self-imposed deadline to unveil the highly anticipated Ernie Bot.

China’s AI rules are expected to take effect later this year, and “will work in tandem with China’s various other regulations around data protection and algorithm development,” CNBC says, adding that “China is not the only country concerned with the development of generative AI. In March, Italy banned ChatGPT citing privacy concerns.”

And The Wall Street Journal reports that the Biden administration is considering “possible rules for AI tools like ChatGPT” as “fears grow over the potential use of artificial intelligence to commit crimes and spread falsehoods.”
