IOC announces inaugural slate of Olympic-licensed esports events

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Thursday that it was organizing a slate of five esports events to be staged ahead of the Summer Games this year in Tokyo. The Olympic Virtual Series (OVS) will feature competitions in auto racing, baseball, cycling, rowing and sailing.

MIT has launched an initiative that examines AI-driven analytics and attitudes toward personal data.

The MIT Future of Data, Trust, and Privacy program will focus on expert collaboration in five technical areas: database systems, applied cryptography, AI and machine learning, data portability and new information architectures, and human-computer interaction.

  • The initiative will provide forums for MIT researchers, policymakers, and industry consortium members to discuss the latest research and policy implications.
  • One of the initiative's goals is to reduce the time between the development of new software systems and new policies to deal with the technology, explained Daniel Weitzner, a founding director of the MIT Internet Policy Research Initiative.
  • MIT wants to work with industry in developing new privacy-preserving tools, Weitzner related.

Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality and the Future of Storytelling

The great poet, Maya Angelou once famously said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Even without AI, we are seeing deep emotional connections to Virtual Beings. The iconic Japanese superstar character, ‘HatsuneMiku’ is a singing hologram that has sold-out concerts around the world and millions of followers.  In 2018, a Japanese fan spent US$18,000 to wed Miku’ saying,“I never cheated on her; I’ve always been in love with Miku-san…For mother, it wasn’t something to celebrate.” He’s not alone, Gatebox, an artificial intelligence company, has issued over 3,700 marriage certificates for “cross-dimensional” marriages.

Other AI startups like Eternime, use AI to learn from you while alive, so that when you die, it can replicate a virtual being chatbot of you to engage in simulated stories with your friends and family. They aim to “give life to the dead.”Yet, what are the unintended consequences of people isolating themselves with a chatbot character of a dead loved one?

Researchers Could Achieve Artificial General Intelligence by Combining Light, Superconductors

The new approach was detailed in Applied Physics Letters by AIP Publishing. 

Jeffrey Shainline is author of the research.

“We argue that by operating at low temperature and using superconducting electronic circuits, single-photon detectors, and silicon light sources, we will open a path toward rich computational functionality and scalable fabrication,” Shainline said. 

Scalable and Functional Artificial Cognitive Systems

According to the researchers and their new approach, the pairing of light for communication with complex electronic circuits for computation could lead to artificial cognitive systems that are far more scalable and functional than traditional approaches that rely on light or electronics alone. 

“What surprised me most was that optoelectronic integration may be much easier when working at low temperatures and using superconductors than when working at room temperatures and using semiconductors,” Shainline continued.

FTC warns it could crack down on biased AI

If those tools are applied in areas like housing or employment, falsely advertised as unbiased, or trained on data that is gathered deceptively, the agency says it could intervene.

“In a rush to embrace new technology, be careful not to overpromise what your algorithm can deliver,” writes FTC attorney Elisa Jillson — particularly when promising decisions that don’t reflect racial or gender bias. “The result may be deception, discrimination — and an FTC law enforcement action.”

As Protocol points out, FTC chair Rebecca Slaughter recently called algorithm-based bias “an economic justice issue.”

Ikea bets on ‘Apple Glass’ by investing in augmented reality apps

The app, currently available only in TestFlight, relies on the LiDAR sensors in an iPhone. It allows users to capture complete 3D room plans — including windows and doors — and enables you to place select Ikea items into your room. Not only can you add furniture, but you can change your wall colors, place decorations and art, and export your design to share with others.

This is undoubtedly a boon to companies like Ikea, as it was discovered that customers who use AR tools were 11 times more likely to make a purchase. On average, customers who purchase items after viewing them in AR are 22% less likely to return them.

Insights: Gen Z’s Social Media, Game Habits Pushing Entertainment In New Directions

...watching TV shows and movies at home is just not that big a deal. In fact, among a list of entertainment options, film and TV watching was fourth for Gen Z. For other generations, it’s always been No. 1.

“It’s the first generation where we’ve seen this,” Westcott said. “Gaming is much more important than other forms of entertainment. When they’re on social media, they’re using it as a gateway to music and gaming. They’re using those social-media platforms as access to other content.”

...it’s important to remember what’s helping drive the popularity of many games, from first-person shooters to casual mobile titles: their social components.

“The vast majority are connected with their friends while playing games,” Westcott said. “They use gaming as a social connection while playing.”

More problematically, half of Gen Z respondents said they get news and current events through their social media channels. Given the challenges social media companies have faced with disinformation, gaslighting, and similar issues, that’s not…useful.

In yet another warning sign for social media companies, a strong majority think the platforms are responsible for what’s published on their platforms.

Amazon is opening a hair salon to test new tech and products

Amazon's latest venture into physical stores comes with a twist, and maybe a blow dry. The retail giant on Tuesday announced the launch of Amazon Salon

The experimental salon is located in London and will offer hair care and styling services. It'll also serve as a place for Amazon to trial new technologies like "augmented reality (AR) hair consultations to point-and-learn technology," the company said in a blog post. There will be Fire tabletsat each styling station, and customers will be able to buy products from Amazon's UK store by scanning a QR code on the shelf.

  • Platforms and XR experience providers should consult with the larger community of stakeholders including, industry experts, advocates, policymakers, XR users, and non-XR users, and integrate community feedback into decisions about software and hardware design and data collection, use, and sharing.
