Why You Shouldn’t Pay Remote Workers Based on Where They Live
Facebook’s salary decision sets a dangerous precedent
But even with the benefit of expanded opportunity to look forward to, cost of living adjustments (COLAs) are still a deeply unfair and bad practice. People doing the same jobs and providing the same value should be paid the same.
It only took a pandemic for us to live in Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson’s remote work fantasymarker.medium.com
In other words, the business justification for employees needing to be in a major metro is collapsing.

California Institute of the Arts Creates Virtual Reality Game TO REMEMBER A FRIEND
The new game To Remember a Friend will have a series of live streams of the beta playthroughs on Twitch as part of the CalArts School of Theater, Beyond the Stage festival on May 6th at 5 & 8 pm, May 7th at 6 pm, and May 8th at 2 & 5 pm (all times PST). The streams will be hosted by the creative team with special guest players, and the audience will have the opportunity to help choose the narrative direction through chat.
Game Description: The year is 2040. A young woman named Jane Watson has been murdered in her apartment. No one knows what happened... but you plan to find out. You play as Whitlock, a rookie detective undergoing an experimental consciousness transfer procedure in exchange with the comatose sole witness to the murder. In this virtual reality narrative adventure game, you must work to uncover what really happened to Jane Watson, but just remember that memory is fluid, and those around you all have an agenda...
"We wanted to create a VR experience around False Memory where the user would have to navigate a narrative space that was always changing. They would have to question the reality they've been placed into and try to uncover which memories are real to uncover the truth." - Kathleen Fox (Creative Director)
After the beta release, the game will be available for download from the team directly at www.torememberafriend.com and other platforms.

THIS ANIMAL-SHAPED AUTONOMOUS RACING BIKE OF THE FUTURE FEARS NO G-FORCES!
[PhilNote: the modern equivalent of slot car racing with no human involvement at all.]
The Armadillo by Christian Grajewski is a motorcycle concept that’s envisioned in the Moto Ai X Championship – sometime in the future – for high octane racing to thrill the online fans or crowds at the autodromes. The idea’s uniqueness culminated from the fact that the designer imagines the bike to be the character with an arm, legs, body, and head. To be fair, it indeed looks like some creature, ready to wake from its slumber – boiling to chase down any prey on its two wheels. Since the ride is fully autonomous, the seating position has been done away with – giving it a definitive creature-like shape.

The ‘metaverse’ bet: crypto-rich investors snap up virtual real estate
"The current Cambrian explosion of NFTs that you see is all about acquisition – people want to buy up NFTs, gobble as many of them as they can," said Anand Venkateswaran, aka Twobadour, who runs the Metapurse fund with Metakovan.
"But it's just the tip of the iceberg. The real explosion will happen when they're able to ... experience these NFTs as they were intended. If it's a plot of virtual land, you ought to move around in it, have an immersive experience in it."
In what will be one of the biggest names to join the party, videogame maker Atari (ATAR.PA) told Reuters it planned to launch its own blockchain-based virtual world and would soon announce details.
A PLOT OF VIRTUAL LAND: $500K+
The NFT frenzy has heightened interest in blockchain-based online environments. The best known are Decentraland, Cryptovoxels, Somnium Space and The Sandbox, where virtual real estate prices are hitting new highs.
Decentraland has seen more than $50 million in total sales, including land, avatars, usernames and wearables like virtual outfits. A patch of land measuring 41,216 virtual square metres sold for $572,000 on April 11, which the platform said was a record.
...
"I expect that there'll be a crypto winter in the next couple of months, the whole NFT boom will explode and then all the value will absolutely collapse," said Ben Nolan, founder of the virtual world Cryptovoxels.

The Metaverse Is Coming. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang on the Fusion of Virtual and Physical Worlds
Do you worry about bad actors getting their hands on all this powerful technology and using it to sow chaos, perpetrate evil and disrupt this utopian vision of the future?
The best way is to democratize the technology in order to enable all society, which is vastly good—and to put great technology in their hands, so that they could use the same technology—and, ideally, superior technology—to stay safe.

What is Triller? How to live stream Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren fight on the social media app
What is Triller?
Triller is a video-sharing social networking service. It allows users to create and share short videos, including videos manually set to music or otherwise have it sync automatically via artificial intelligence technology. Released for Android and iOS in 2015, it has evolved to include social networking features after originally operating as a video editing app.
Triller has a heavy association with the music business, having deals in place with Spotify and Apple Music to use songs from their libraries. Proxima Media is the majority investor, but Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group have also invested in the app. Several artists have invested in the app as well, including Marshmello, The Weeknd, Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne.
Why is the Jake Paul fight on Triller?
Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren is the first main event of Triller's new partnership with Snoop Dogg, called "Triller Fight Club." It's a series of annual pay-per-view cards, produced and hosted by Snoop Dogg, that carries over elements from Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr.'s fight in November 2020. That was the first fight on the Triller app.

Europe eyes strict rules for artificial intelligence
According to a draft of its upcoming rules, obtained by POLITICO, the European Commission would ban certain uses of "high-risk" artificial intelligence systems altogether, and limit others from entering the bloc if they don't meet its standards. Companies that don't comply could be fined up to €20 million or 4 percent of their turnover. The Commission will unveil its final regulation on April 21.
The rules are the first of their kind to regulate artificial intelligence, and the EU is keen to highlight its unique approach. It doesn't want to leave powerful tech companies to their own devices like in the U.S., nor does it want to go by the way of China in harnessing the tech to fashion a surveillance state.

Pay attention to India’s future of A.I.
The researchers learned, for instance, that Indian investors participated in A.I.-related deals in the country worth an estimated $1.2 billion from 2015 through 2019. During that same time period, U.S. financers were estimated to have invested $858 million into Indian companies that specialize in A.I., underscoring the significance of U.S. funding in India’s A.I. ecosystem. Chinese investors, by comparison, only invested an estimated $159 million into Indian A.I. companies during that timespan.
A misunderstanding that some Americans may have about India and A.I. is that the two countries may be heavily competing for A.I. talent, whereas “the fact is, it is more an avenue of cooperation between India and the U.S. then an avenue of conflict,” Chahal said.
...“There is more hope than fears as of now,” she said regarding Indian technologists coming to the U.S.
