Artificial intelligence reveals the recipe for a perfect stack this Shrove Tuesday – and claims just ONE flip is ideal
According to the London-based firm, seven ingredients – flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, milk, butter and eggs – will give the fluffiest pancakes.

And while you might be tempted to go for multiple flips, the AI claims that just one toss is necessary to ensure perfect pancakes.
THE ULTIMATE AI-APPROVED PANCAKES
From the optimum butter-to-milk ratio, to the cooking time & heat, Monolith identified the ultimate combination of ingredients:
- Flour - 210g
- Sugar - 48g
- Baking powder - 14g
- Salt - 6g
- Eggs - 2
- Milk - 256g
- Butter - 25g
- Number of flips - 1
- Pan temp - medium heat (electric) / Low heat (gas)

chinese researchers develop a riderless autonomous bicycle
a team of researchers from tsinghua university in china has developed an autonomous bike that can balance itself, swerve to avoid obstacles, detect and follow targets, and respond to voice commands. the riderless bicycle works using an electronic chip called the tianjic chip, which integrates two approaches to artificial general intelligence (AGI): computer-science-oriented and neuroscience-oriented.
‘using just one chip, we demonstrate the simultaneous processing of versatile algorithms and models in an unmanned bicycle system, realizing real-time object detection, tracking, voice control, obstacle avoidance and balance control. our study is expected to stimulate AGI development by paving the way to more generalized hardware platforms,’ say the scientists in their research paper published on nature in july 2019.

How The UK Is Using VR To Improve Safety For Its Largest Environmental Project Yet
For those who may be out of the loop, the UK is currently in the process of developing an eco-friendly high-speed rail line as part of the countries transition to low carbon transportation. The HS2 Rail Line will feature 25 stations across London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Leeds, connecting 30 million people while at the same time generating 500,000 new jobs. When complete, the HS2 will represent the countries largest environmental project to date, offering an alternative form of transportation that emits 17x less carbon than a conventional flight.
“From initial conversations with the team at Align JV, it was clear they were looking at using innovation and the latest technology to enhance the safety of all aspects of the working environment” said Darren Verschuren, International Account Director at Serious Labs. “Not only is simulator training engaging, cost-effective and safe, it provides trainees with better capabilities, while decreasing the potential for accidents and fatalities — something which is better for everyone.”

Finally, a Site That Just Lets Me Know How to Cook the Dang Thing
Aptly named “Just the Recipe,” it takes any recipe URL and spits out a list of ingredients, estimated prep time, how many servings it makes, and step-by-step directions.
The site, which we spotted thanks to the good folks on Twitter, automatically sorts out the salient details, pun intended, from the needless word fluff. Since the system appears to be algorithmically generated, it’s not always perfect. A few times we tried it out, the site got its signals crossed and listed ridiculous amounts for some ingredients (it seems to have particular trouble sorting out ingredients that recipes typically leave open “to taste” like salt and pepper) but it was pretty consistent about picking up on all the important directions and putting them in the right order.

Star Wars Episode X Written By Artificial Intelligence Is Weirdly Entertaining
With A.I. systems evolving rapidly and continuously improving their ability to generate the written word, scripts written by A.I. is a trend that will not be going away anytime soon. While these programs are still far from perfect and mainly used for entertainment, it is certainly becoming less difficult to envision a future in which writers could be replaced partially, or maybe even entirely, by artificial intelligence.

Shakespeare in virtual reality: is this the future of theatre?
Based on the Shakespearian classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream, performers will bring this new play to life in a digital midsummer forest. Through virtual reality (VR), audience members at home will be able to interact with actors and guide the story in real-time.
In collaboration with Manchester International Festival and thanks to funding from big tech names including Innovate UK and Fortnite creators Epic Games, Dream marks the latest efforts from the theatre community to give us the live performances experience we miss so much.

AI progress depends on us using less data, not more
1. AI has a compute addiction.
2. Big data can mean more spurious noise.
3. We’re still only making linear progress.
4. Privacy concerns are expanding.
How I learned to stop worrying and enjoy data scarcity
In order to overcome these challenges, specifically in my area, cyber security, we have to, first and foremost, align expectations.
Algorithmic efficacy as top priority.
Human augmentation-first approach.
Leveraging hardware improvements.
Eyal Balicer is Senior Vice President for Global Cyber Partnership and Product Innovation at Citi.

Apple launches an augmented reality app to promote For All Mankind on Apple TV Plus
But For All Mankind: Time Capsule is one of the first indications of Apple tying all of its hardware, content, and service ambitions together. It’s an augmented reality app downloaded from the App Store that prompts users to subscribe to Apple TV Plus to watch For All Mankind, with additional content for LIDAR-equipped Apple devices.

It’s the kind of cross-promotional content that spans Apple’s wide array of businesses. It could also offer a glimpse at the kind of integrated hardware, software, and service bundle that Apple could be considering for any future AR devices.

Oculus Co-Founder Invests in VR Startup Nanome
PhilNote: more funding for an established scientific visualization startup. We saw this a few years ago at the OC VR demo day.
The funding round was led by Bullpen Capital with participation from Oculus co-founder Michael Antonov’s Formic Adventures along with other angel investors. Nanome’s VR platform has been there since 2018 and is available on both Steam and Oculus Store. The new funds will be channeled into expanding the VR startup’s team and building new partnerships.
According to Nanome CEO Steve McCloskey, the startup has had a “compelling vision about what scientific collaboration should look like” and its VR platform aims to equip scientists working in various fields such as discovering new ways to combat diseases, addressing climate change and improving people’s lives. McCloskey states that Nanome provides an intuitive virtual interface where scientists can experiment, design and learn “at the nanoscale.” He noted that the new funding will give Nanome the “firepower” to increase its impact, support more research initiatives and continue its work in revolutionizing biotech and scientific research.
