Thought-detection: AI has infiltrated our last bastion of privacy

Research published last week from Queen Mary University in London describes an application of a deep neural network that can determine a person’s emotional state by analyzing wireless signalsthat are used like radar. In this research, participants in the study watched a video while radio signals were sent towards them and measured when they bounced back. Analysis of body movements revealed “hidden” information about an individual’s heart and breathing rates. From these findings, the algorithm can determine one of four basic emotion types: anger, sadness, joy, and pleasure. The researchers proposed this work could help with the management of health and wellbeing and be used to perform tasks like detecting depressive states.

Ahsan Noor Khan, a PhD student and first author of the study, said: “We’re now looking to investigate how we could use low-cost existing systems, such as Wi-Fi routers, to detect emotions of a large number of people gathered, for instance in an office or work environment.” Among other things, this could be useful for HR departments to assess how new policies introduced in a meeting are being received, regardless of what the recipients might say. Outside of an office, police could use this technology to look for emotional changes in a crowd that might lead to violence.

The research team plans to examine public acceptance and ethical concerns around the use of this technology.

Top EU Privacy Regulator Calls for Total Ban on Targeted Ads

Forbes reports that the EDPS further called for “measures to make sure that when attempting to remove illegal or harmful content from their platforms, companies should avoid — ‘insofar as is possible’ — the processing of personal data … [and that] profiling for purposes of content moderation should be prohibited unless the provider can demonstrate that such measures are strictly necessary.”

TechCrunch reports that before the laws can be approved, they will go through “debate and negotiations in the European Parliament and Council … [which] means battle lines are being drawn to try to influence the final shape of the biggest overhaul to pan-EU digital rules for decades.”

Apple chief executive Tim Cook, who decried the ad-tech “data complex,” urged the EU to “double down on enforcement of its flagship General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).”

CHARISMA.AI AND SHY TEA GAMES ANNOUNCE IMMERSIVE DREAM SIMULATION GAME, POWERED BY OPENAI’s GPT-3

CHARISMA.AI AND SHY TEA GAMES ANNOUNCE IMMERSIVE DREAM SIMULATION GAME, POWERED BY OPENAI's GPT-3

11th February 2021, Munich and Oxford.

Independent games developers Shy Tea Games, Charisma.ai and AI expert Connor Leahy today announced that their forthcoming title will allow players to explore interpretations of dreams as 3D, interactive dream-worlds in Project Electric Sheep.

Project Electric Sheep combines the interactivity and visuals of a video game with the cutting-edge text generation and analysis of OpenAI’s GPT-3, to create thought-provoking and immersive worlds which players can explore.

Key features are:

-       Explore dream worlds, based around countless player-input topics
-       Meet infinite characters, each with unique, GPT-3 generated dialogues
-       Experience real-time world-building, in the form of GPT-3 created literature, advertisements, headlines, graffiti and more
-       Travel through diverse landscapes and 3D structures, generated using procedural generation in tandem with GPT-3’s semantic search functionality

The full title is scheduled for release in 2021.

...

Guy Gadney, Executive Producer at Charisma.ai said: “The automation of creativity presents some strong philosophical questions that should be explored by the creative industries. There are wonderful opportunities for new forms of creativity to emerge, but also the potential for misinformation and misuse if viewed solely through the lens of technology.

...

Professor Radcliffe, one of the infinite in-game characters whose dialogue is generated by GPT-3, stated the following on the project: “I think the way it works is, first a person dreams of something, then a neural net is used to convert the dream into a script that a video game can interpret, then a game engine is used to create an environment that can be experienced in a virtual world.”

SAG-AFTRA Approves New Influencer Agreement

“The Influencer Agreement was created in response to the unique nature of Influencer-generated branded content and offers a new way for influencers to work under a SAG-AFTRA agreement. We want to be able to support both current and future SAG-AFTRA members in this space and for them to be able to access the benefits of union coverage,” said SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris in a statement to Backstage.

Previously, the union had covered advertising done by YouTubers. This new influencer agreement takes it one step further: it will cover advertising work across all social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitch, and TikTok

OpenAI and Stanford researchers call for urgent action to address harms of large language models like GPT-3

“Participants suggested that developers may only have a six- to nine-month
advantage until others can reproduce their results. It was widely agreed
upon that those on the cutting edge should use their position on the
frontier to responsibly set norms in the emerging field,” the paper reads.
“This further suggests the urgency of using the current time window, during
which few actors possess very large language models, to develop appropriate
norms and principles for others to follow.”

...

A paper published last month by Stanford University Ph.D. candidate and Gradio founder Abubakar Abid detailed the anti-Muslim tendencies of text generated by GPT-3. Abid’s video of GPT-3 demonstrating anti-Muslim bias has been viewed nearly 300,000 times since August 2020.

...

Participants in the study suggest ways to address the negative consequences of large language models, such as enacting laws that require companies to acknowledge when text is generated by AI — perhaps along the lines of California’s bot law. Other recommendations include:

  • Training a separate model that acts as a filter for content generated by a language model
  • Deploying a suite of bias tests to run models through before allowing people to use the model
  • Avoiding some specific use cases

U.S. and China Already in an Arms Race for 6G Technologies

“Unlike 5G, North America will not let the opportunity for a generational leadership slide by so easily this time,” said Frost & Sullivan senior industry director of information and communications Vikrant Gandhi. “It is likely that the competition for 6G leadership will be fiercer than that for 5G.”

Canadian media has reported that China already “launched a satellite in November to test airwaves for potential 6G transmission, and Huawei has a 6G research center in Canada.” ZTE Corporation has also partnered with China Unicom Hong Kong to develop 6G technology.

In the U.S., the effort to “advance North American leadership in 6G” is spearheaded by the telecom standards developer Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), which launched the Next G Alliance in October. ATIS members include Apple, AT&T, Qualcomm, Google and Samsung Electronics — but not Huawei. In the European Union, Nokia is leading a 6G wireless project that includes Ericsson, Telefonica and universities.

Bloomberg reports that the fault lines created over 5G, centered around China’s Huawei Technologies and fears of “how 5G technology is being used by authoritarian regimes,” is very unlikely to change with the rise of 6G.

The capabilities of 6G include “a potential rate of 1 terabyte per second,” latency of 0.1 millisecond (compared to 1 millisecond for the minimum for 5G).

Leading facial recognition technology provider Corsight AI announces expansion into the Oceania region

Corsight AI, a leading facial recognition technology provider, today announced that it has expanded its reach and offering throughout the Oceania market, and has appointed Sean Borg to accelerate market growth and support the regional surge in demand for facial recognition technology.

Rated highly by NIST and The US Department for Homeland Security, Corsight's facial recognition technology is the only one on the market that allows for a more comprehensive, ethical and accurate detection of identifying individuals features; thereby driving down false positives and enhancing accuracy for users. This advanced technology exceeds the human brain's ability to register and recognise faces in the most challenging environments — even with face masks that have become a significant part of our post Covid-19 reality.

This technology will be most welcomed in a region that is recognised as being early biometric adopters, with Australiaand New Zealand already having a more receptive view for ethical facial recognition. In Australia alone, Law courts, Casino's and many other establishments have already adopted facial recognition to keep people safe from real-time threats.
