AI expert Stuart Russell to join TC’s Robotics+AI 2020 at UC Berkeley
Computer scientist Stuart Russell, one of the world’s top experts on AI and author of the recently published “Human Compatible: Artificial Intelligence and the Problem of Control,” will join us at TC Sessions: Robotics & AI (March 3 at UC Berkeley’s Zellerbach Hall) ), to discuss how researchers and founders today will determine AI's ultimate impact.
At a time when the debate about AI seems to be polarized between the alarmists predicting the imminent “singularity” and those pooh-poohing the advent of human-level AI, Dr. Russell, a professor of computer science at UC Berkeley, cuts through the debate to argue that we still have time to ensure that the doomsayers are proven wrong. As Dr. Russell argues in “Human Compatible,” the key is to ensure that AI designs “will necessarily defer to humans: they will ask permission, they will accept correction, and they will allow themselves to be switched off.”

Moscow-area cows enjoy summer year-round with new virtual reality glasses
A dairy farm near Moscow has begun testing virtual reality glasses designed specially for cows. Agriculture officials are betting that the futuristically decked-out bovines will experience heightened moods, which will raise milk yields in turn. Each set of glasses is designed with the cows’ physiology and visual system in mind, enabling the animals to enjoy views of summer fields year-round.
In their first round of testing, the VR headsets decreased the Moscow-area herd’s anxiety and increased its average mood as expected. A group of veterinarians participated in the design and testing process for the new devices.

A Marina Abramović sale could break new ground for virtual-reality art
In The Life – which is estimated to fetch around $775,000 – the artist is present (very on brand). At least, her avatar is, as it floats in and out of sight around the installation. The 19-minute piece is all the result of an extensive capture process that involved Abramović’s body being shot by 32 different cameras linked with “a sophisticated algorithmic system”, according to Christie’s.
When the artwork premiered at London’s Serpentine Galleries, it gained polarising responses, to say the least. The Guardian reviewer Jonathan Jones calls it “a pointless perversion that hurts your eyes” (aw) but it can also be argued that the integration of the new technology is a natural progression for Abramović, who has long toyed with the theme of immortalisation.
“A hundred years beyond when anybody who ever knew (Marina) was alive, there will be people who will see her walk into the room and will feel that sense of connection, of human experience,” says Todd Eckert, founder of the production studio Tin Drum, which collaborated with Abramović on both the artwork and its sale.
The eventual buyer of the boundary-pushing lot will receive the recording of the piece along with “wearable spatial computing devices”. First, though, The Life will tour internationally, with details to be released in Spring 2020.
For now, you can revisit Marina Abramović speaking earlier this year about becoming an avatar and her prophecy for the next 100 years.

UT professor to lead new Austin-based Sony AI division
The new organization will pursue advanced AI technology at research sites in Tokyo, Austin and Europe. The Austin operations will include an AI lab, which is scheduled to open this year, the company said.
Peter Stone, a professor of computer science at UT with expertise in the AI field, will head up the U.S. arm of the new organization, Sony said. Stone will also continue teaching at UT, and will continue his roles with Texas Robotics and the university’s Learning Agents Research Group in the Artificial Intelligence Lab.
Sony declined to give more details about the size and scope of the Austin division. Stone said his team will include about 13 AI researchers, but at least initially the other team members will be spread out across the country.
...
The gastronomy division will focus on bringing Sony’s mission to “fill the world with emotion, through the power of creativity and technology” to food, Gephardt said.
“We intend to harness AI and robotics from the perspective of “getting closer to creators,” with the aim of expanding the creative options/creativity of chefs,” Gephardt said. “Top-level chefs can gain inspiration for new recipes by interacting with AI, and we also want to help all of those who prepare food in their day to day lives to enjoy that process of creation even more.”

Metastage Launches AR App With First-Ever Holographic Performances By Laura Rizzotto
But where the VR consumer market is still relatively small, there are billions of smartphones that can run AR. Metastage’s app, developed in partnership with Magnopus (the company behind immersive experiences for Pixar’s Coco and Blade Runner: 2049) allows anyone to incorporate these holograms into their daily lives.
“An augmented reality app in and of itself is not groundbreaking, but the holographic performance we are premiering with Laura Rizzotto absolutely is,” Heller said. “This is a new way to experience music and your favorite performers.”
For Heller, part of launching this app is as a scout mission—a vehicle to experiment and test hypotheses. When she set out to launch the AR companion to the studio, she wanted to go big—something that showcased the strengths of the medium and simultaneously caught people’s attention to drive conversation.
“Her voice is incredible, she’s a great dancer, and her songs are incredibly catchy—she is Pop at its best,” Heller said. “When we approached her to do this with us, we wanted to launch with a full unreleased song, and we wanted to go big with it. Because she is independent, she can call her own shots, and we were lucky enough to get the ‘One More Night’ premiere as a hologram on the Metastage app.
“For the first time ever, users can tailor the artist’s performance to their own taste and comfort,” said Carolina Rizzotto, who co-produced Laura Rizzotto’s Metastage Experience. “You can take Laura and choose where she’ll perform and even change her capture size. You can make her twice her normal size...or you can even make her the size of an ant and have her perform in your own hand.”
“For the hologram experience, I was on a green screen stage surrounded by 106 cameras, which were capturing me from every possible angle. I had to keep in mind a specific radius boundary for my movements, in order to make sure my body was fully captured, as well as how my performance would look from various angles.”
“We’re about to launch a volumetric performance library of stock assets for game engine that we’re calling, simply, ‘Metastage Captures,’” Heller said. “The assets are regular people in regular clothes doing everyday actions like talking, listening, looking around, etc., on short loops.”
The Metastage AR app is available for Android and iOS.
