Hollywood North: Downloaded showcases Vancouver’s burgeoning VR film potential
The genre is further showcased with Downloaded, a new, locally-shot movie that aims to turn traditional cinematic storytelling into an interactive viewing experience. The eight-minute film allows a viewer to enter inside a computer with the lead character Lisa and try to escape it — or get trapped forever. Basi is executive producer.
“What Downloaded is showcasing is how we can take people from all sectors — scriptwriters, actors, filmmakers, animation specialists, user interface experts and so on — and bring them together to create,” said Basi.
Rankin has been writing VR stories for awhile and sees each one as being both a narrative he wants to tell and a technique for maintaining viewer focus while successfully telling the story. Both he and Basi stress that user testing is going to be key in making movies like this.
“Even if you go into Downloaded and do nothing, you’ll get a narrative. But I also had to take into account those really robust viewers who come in with considerable video game experience who are immediately going to be looking for puzzles, games and so forth.”
6 games band together on Ready Player One-style gaming multiverse
[PhilNote: Blockchain-enhanced interoperability]
These games don’t have tons of players yet, and maybe they aren’t going to set the world on fire, but the developers are trying to pioneer technologies that take advantage of the transparency and security of blockchain, which is the foundation for cryptocurrencies. It’s not so different from a plan advanced by High Fidelity.
Age of Rust, 9Lives Arena, CryptoFights, War of Crypto, Bitcoin Hodler, and Forest Knight are using Enjin Coin’s blockchain development platform to integrate gaming assets stored on the Ethereum blockchain and have committed to creating the first ever gaming multiverse. That means their worlds, characters, and items will be connected.
The key difference is that while Ready Player One’s Oasis is owned by a single person, the multiverse growing on the blockchain is completely decentralized and is developing organically through collaboration and innovation. Though all of the games in the multiverse are using Enjin Coin’s platform to create and integrate their blockchain assets, the multiverse is not governed or controlled by a single entity.

Pope warns social media could imprison people in a ‘virtual reality’
Dublin: On the first day of his historic trip to Dublin the Pope has met with Irish clerical abuse survivors and warned that social media poses a threat to "real life relationships" and it could end up "imprisoning people in a virtual reality".
Speaking at a gathering in Dublin, the pontiff said families should be asking themselves whether they should cut down on their technology usage and spend more time with each other instead.

Magic Leap wants to create art, not just technology
Looking ahead, Magic Leap plans to have its developer and creator conference in Los Angeles on October 9th and 10th. It'll be the first chance for the company to truly gather its community together. In addition to going over every aspect of their technology, Magic Leap also plans to highlight its existing developers and partners. In particular, that includes its relationship with Unity and Fortnite creator Epic, whose 3D engines are used to build AR experiences. As with most developer conferences, there will be a keynote (that's also live-streamed to the public) and a combination of technical and experiential sessions. The company plans to open registration for the conference soon.
"[Magic Leap One] is not the kind of product that everybody on the planet knows what it is, or why they need it, and so it's very hard to just kind of put it on the shelf at the store and hope people buy it," Caraeff said. "What matters is you gotta get people to try it. Once people try it, they say, "Ah, I understand what this is, I can see this now."

This is the first foray into action sports for leading VR broadcast platform NextVR, based in Newport Beach. NextVR will place eight VR cameras along The Loop for the 3D stereoscopic broadcast. Fans will be fully immersed when they're placed at the drop-in and at the peak of the loop.
