The PlayStation VR Games Sony Announced Today Look Amazing

screen-shot-2015-12-05-at-11-24-35-amDuring its PlayStation Experience (PSX) event in San Francisco today, Sony unveiled some new information about the PlayStation VR and showed off some new titles. Unfortunately we’ve gotten no more information on dates aside from early 2016. However, the games we saw during today’s keynote look fantastic.

Sony showed off new titles like Eagle Flight from Ubisoft, Rez Infinite, Modern Zombie Taxi Co. from their Santa Monica studio, Job Simulator, Golem from Highwire Games, 100 foot Robot Golf, Psychonauts 2, and Bandai’s Ace Combat 7. Naturally, none of the games have release dates either, but I’m guessing they’ll be launch titles for the PlayStation VR.

I/ITSEC 2015: USMC sees future in augmented reality

22714df1‘We want something that has limited contractor support,’ he said. ‘We need simple devices that can go to where the marines are… we need equipment that is pretty indestructible.’

Another requirement includes working with common software architecture.

AITT will display virtual indirect fire effects, aircraft, vehicles and role players onto actual terrain.

At the moment, marines are unable to see simulated battlefield effects such as these during force-on-force training and have had to use their imagination to simulate targets and the pressures of combat.

ASTRONAUTS ARE GETTING AUGMENTED REALITY HEADSETS THIS WEEK

This week a resupply mission will carry two Microsoft HoloLenses to the International Space Station (ISS). The devices will be used by astronauts like real-time instruction manuals, part of a NASA project called Project Sidekick. The idea is to facilitate closer communication between astronauts in space and ground control. A technician in Houston could see what an astronaut wearing the HoloLens is seeing in real time. The person in ground control could then draw a circle around a particular piece of hardware or button on the space station, pointing it out to the astronaut and making instructions for repairs or experiments even more clear than relying on written or vocal instructions.

3D amplifies emotions evoked by facial expressions

151124082228_1_540x360In a new study, researchers in Aalto University and University of Helsinki found that 3D facial expressions evoke stronger emotions than their 2D counterparts. Due to the illusion of non-mediation, natural depth levels create the strongest emotional amplifications. In this experiment, depth magnitude was manipulated by varying the distance between the two cameras providing the left and right images for the 3D presentation.

Country’s First Augmented Reality Book on Muziris Released at Kochi

If a travelogue is a journey to another world, Manoj Raveendran’s book ‘Muzreesiloode’ (travelling through Muziris) has an added dimension to it.

The book has been written using the ‘augmented reality’ technology, enabling readers to watch videos of the sites referred in the book.

Readers can watch 40 videos and view more than 100 still photographs from the book using android phone, while the Google Play Store mobile application will help readers view moving visuals of Muziris, the ancient port.

“A book on Muziris will never be complete, as it is a developing subject due to its historical and archaeological importance. The technology helps provide the latest information, while the book as it is remains unchanged,” he says.

The official release will be held on December 11 at Sahitya Akademi, Thrissur. Initially, the book was priced at `550, but it was reduced to `450 later.

Zombies, zip lines and virtual reality score big at this year’s IAAPA expo

1000w_lac_iaapa_ghostbusters_credit_seth_kuberskyExtreme Engineering stood out on the show floor this year with their Cloud Coaster, a full-circuit zip line that pulls dangling riders uphill before releasing them into a course of curves and drops.

Zombie-inspired products at this year's IAAPA expo ranged from plush toys to a paintball-gun-festooned hayride truck, and animatronic lurchers sprayed "blood" in my mouth inside two separate haunted houses.

new Maestro technology, which uses a Kinect-esque sensor to let you fling bolts of 3-D lightning with a flick of your fingers. When finished, guests will glide past sets and video projections, waving their arms to launch colorful blasts at the blocky bad guys. It took a bit of trial and error to calibrate my aim (hopefully you'll be able to practice in the queue before boarding), but Maestro could be the most exciting advancement in interactive rides since Disney's Toy Story Mania.

Mack Rides blew everyone else out of the expo by sending them up I-Drive to Fun Spot, where they temporarily rigged the Freedom Flyer suspended steel coaster with Samsung VR headsets. I took it for a spin, and was immersed in a sci-fi CGI cityscape under attack by a giant robot. As the coaster soared and swooped, I seemed to evade explosions and dodge collapsing buildings, turning a tame family coaster into an epic E-ticket. If this is the future of attractions, beam me up!

Nonny de la Peña: Journalist. Virtual reality pioneer. Occasional painter.

nonnyDe la Peña is the founder and CEO of Emblematic Group, a company focused on immersive, journalistic storytelling based in Los Angeles.

She's originally from California, and went to Harvard University where she majored in sociology and visual and environmental studies. She worked as a journalist for years, including as a correspondent for Newsweek.

After building a version of Guantanamo Bay Prison on Second Life eight years ago, she started thinking how VR could be used to tell news stories.

While collaborating on a project at the University of Barcelona, she got to try a piece dealing with the bystander effect that put the viewer in the middle of a bar fight. Since then, De la Peña's worked to create immersive narratives in VR.

Hunger in Los Angeles took two years to build and $700 of De la Peña's own money. The prototype she used came from USC's Institute for Creative Technologies, specifically Mark Bolas, now-Oculus founder Palmer Luckey, Thai Phan, and Evan Suma.

The piece premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014. Actor Gina Rodriguez, who won the 2014 Golden Globe for best actress for her CW show Jane the Virgin, stopped by.

"I didn't know how people were going to behave and that moment when the goggles came off and she was bawling—you could hear her voice and it's just like, 'You're crying, oh my God, you're crying,'" De la Peña said, "That's happened over and over again and that's the moment where I'm like 'I'm really on to something.'"

See the invisible wireless signals around you with this augmented reality app

www.architectureofradio.com

The app offers an augmented-reality experience: spin your iPhone or iPad around you, and your device will act like a window into a previously invisible world. Spherical wavefronts emanate from wireless routers and distant cell towers. You might even spot a satellite passing overhead.

The iOS app was released earlier this month for $2.99 — Android users will have to wait until the new year to try it out.
