Report from the SMPTE 4K/UHDTV Symposium – 4K/UHD TV – Will it be a hit with consumers?

Toward the beginning of SMPTE’s 4K/UHD TV – Will it be a hit with consumers? Panel, Samsung’s Dan Schinasi stated that Samsung learned the lesson from their 3D experience of creating limited-access content offers and is working on building out the 4K ecosystem.  He noted that the ITU’s David Wood has been researching ‘what is immersion’ and how does it impact the viewing experience. ‘You get a wider field of view without seeing the pixel structure.’  ‘You watch it longer.’  ‘You are more engaged.’  ‘And people migrate to the better quality.’

NPD DisplaySearch’s Paul Gagnon said that adoption will depend on convincing people that the content is coming.  Not accomplishing that was part of the significant but still disappointing market adoption of 3D TVs.  TV replacement cycles are currently in the 7-8 year range.  The average set being replaced worldwide is 32-37”.  Consumers usually upgrade to a 10” larger screen, and 4K sets in the upper 40” range are not readily available  Beyond the US and China, where large screens are popular, screen sizes top out at 55” in many parts of the world.  Plus people approach replacement with a budget in mind, so price point will matter.

Steve Venuti of the HDMI Licensing organization said that consumers want resolution.  He doesn’t see color bit depth and other elements that HDMI 2.0 enables being important to consumers.  Sony’s Jamie Marsh concurred that better picture quality is what people want.

The very high frame rate models (240 hz) of HDTV have not grown as much as we expected them to, added Paul Gagnon.  The higher cost may be the major factor, but he noted that many consumers take an ‘is it good enough’ position.

The full panel discussed the fact that upconversion will be extremely important in both viewing experience and UHDTV marketing for the foreseeable future.  There is a huge difference between the quality top-tier upconversion solutions and the lower priced solutions coming out of China.  DisplaySearch’s data shows that consumers in China don’t care about that quality.  Most of the sales in the US are from the higher quality vendors.  The industry learned from 3D that the quality of the conversion matters.  With 3D, consumers had the choice to turn 3D conversion on or not.  With 4K, every HDTV signal fed to the set is displayed as upconverted.

Samsung currently shows native 4K content in their in-store demos, but those demos are also equipped with upconversion demo material.

Pointing out the title of the panel session, Paul Gagnon noted that simply calling it 4K/UHD TV adds to consumer confusion.  Common terminology and common ground on what we are talking about is needed or else this simple marketing issue can become a barrier to adoption.  CEA has come up with definitions in the US, but Europe and Asia don’t comply with them.  DisplaySearch is having an internal discussion, because they want to use the terms that their clients use.

Sony’s Jamie Marsh reminded the audience that consumers are already starting to have 4K or greater resolution experiences with their cameras.  They will want to see their captured high resolution images displayed properly.

4KTV at SMPTE: Broadcaster Update

HeyeperZoomU.S. broadcasters have employed 4K on the production side. Bob Seidel of CBS said the network is now acquiring assets in 4K. He also described how the network used 4K for what it’s calling “Heyeper Zoom,” with emphasis on the “eye.” CBS employed six 4K cameras at the Super Bowl to acquire footage at 3840 x 2160 pixels and used the footage for slo-mo replays and highlights.

Beginning of this year, Fox did NASCAR in 4K… acquisition, FOR-A FT-100 and Canon C-500, which was also used for the MLB All-Star Game along with AJA’s KiPro Quad DeBayer. For NFL games, Fox used the Canon C-500 with AJA’s KiPro Quad DeBayer and Corvid Ultra, as well as EVS XT servers.

What Fox has learned with Super Zoom, Callahan said, is that:
- Not every play lends itself to 4K.
- Focus is critical.
- Filtering is needed for extraction.
- Uncompressed is better.
- Motion blur is still a problem with 4K.
- Moving 4x3 Gbps SDI can be difficult.

4KTV at SMPTE: Consumer Update

4KTVSamsungThe debate about whether or not 4K resolution will be detectable by the human eye in the average living room situation is immaterial. Here it comes, ready or not. So please, at least get the color right, Pete Putman said to a room full of applauding engineers at the SMPTE Technical Conference in Hollywood.

Putman, the walking encyclopedia of display technology, said 8-bit color should be “outlawed” for 4K.

“Eight-bit color isn’t sufficient for 4K, 10-bit and 12-bit must be used,” he said.

The lower color depth yields abrupt borders on color fields that look a little like a paint-by-numbers kit painting. It’s a waste of resolution.

As with all emerging technologies, there’s a chokepoint, and with 4KTVs, it’s the interface. The maximum data rate minus the overhead for HDMI 1.4 is sufficient for 8-bit, 3840 x 2160 4K at 30 Hz, but not 10- and 12-bit at 60 Hz. HDMI 2.0 can handle a higher payload, but it still can’t handle 10-bit color, Putman said. DisplayPort 1.2 supports 60p, 10-bit 4K, but is not as ubiquitous as HDMI.

Million-Year Data Storage Disk Unveiled

Million year disk[Philip Lelyveld comment; this could be added to the list of potential film archiving solutions.]

Magnetic hard discs can store data for little more than a decade. But nanotechnologists have now designed and built a disk that can store data for a million years or more.

The data is stored in the pattern of lines etched into a thin metal disc and then covered with a protective layer.

The metal in question is tungsten, which they chose because of its high melting temperature (3,422 degrees C) and low thermal expansion coefficient.  The protective layer is silicon nitride (Si3N4) chosen because of its high resistance to fracture and its low thermal expansion coefficient.

These guys made their disc using standard patterning techniques and stored data in the form of QR codes with lines 100nm wide.

Experts See Fuzzy Future for Ultra-HD TV

Ultra-High-Definition 4K television is poised to be the next standard, the TV that will dominate the living room of the mid-21st century.

But to hear the technologists assembled for the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineeers’ day-long symposium on UHD TV tell it, Ultra-TV will tread a hard and thorny path on its way to wide adoption.

“If we deliver something that is Ultra-HD lite, if you want to call it that, will the consumers see enough of a difference to make them want to buy it?”

Many of the interim steps to HD have paradoxical consequences. For example, major brand Ultra-HD televisions have built in upscaling to convert regular HD content to UHD. Upscaling is technically challenging, but even if looks great, it’s problematic: if consumers will accept upscaled content, why should producers incur the costs of UHD production?

Johns later observed that if producers use 4K cameras, the result looks better even in regular HD, but “and if you do that you’re actually eroding the difference between HD and Ultra-HD.”

The Top Five Trend-Setting Cities on Twitter

But in recent years, researchers have become increasingly interested in the relationship between a network and the geography it is superimposed on. What role does geography play in the emergence and spread of trends? And which areas are trend setters and which are trend followers?

 

The results are revealing. They say most trends die away quickly–around 70 per cent of trends last only 20 minutes and only 0.3 per cent last more than a day.

Ferrara and co say they can see three distinct geographical regions that share similar trends–the East Coast, the Midwest and Southwest. It’s easy to imagine how trends arise at a low level and spread through the region through local links such as friends.

But these guys say there is also a fourth cluster of influential cities that also form a group where the emergence of trends is related. However, these place are not geographically related. They are metropolitan areas  such as Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Chicago and so on.

What links these places is not geography but airports, say Ferrara and co. Their hypothesis is that topics trend in these places because of the influence of air passengers. In other words, trending topics spread just like diseases.

The top five sources of trends are: Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Washington, Seattle and New York.

Online TV, video $35bn revenues by 2018

Global online TV and video revenues (over fixed broadband networks) will reach $34.99 billion in 2018, a massive increase from the $3.98 billion recorded in 2010 and the $15.94 billion expected in 2013, according to the Online TV and Video Forecasts report from Digital TV Research. By 2018, 520 million homes in 40 countries will watch online television and video (both paid-for and ad-supported), up from 182 million in 2010.

America’s Greatest Inventor

Obviously, Edison’s inventions were revolutionary. But as this book makes clear, the way he worked was also crucial for his success. For example, Edison consciously built on ideas from predecessors as well as contemporaries. And just as important, he assembled a team of people—engineers, chemists, mathematicians, and machinists—that he trusted and empowered to carry out his ideas. Names like Batchelor and Kruesi may not be famous today, but without their contributions, Edison might not be either.

 

Second, Edison was a very practical person. He learned early on that it wasn’t enough to simply come up with great ideas in a vacuum; he had to invent things that people wanted. That meant understanding the market, designing products that met his customers’ needs, convincing his investors to support his ideas, and then promoting them. Edison didn’t invent the light bulb; he invented the light bulb that worked, and the one that sold.

 

Finally, Edison recognized that inventions rarely come in a single flash of inspiration. You set a goal, measure progress using data, see what’s working—and what isn’t working—adjust your plan, and try again. This process can be very frustrating because it means running into a lot of dead ends. But each dead end tells you something useful. As Edison famously said, “I have not failed 10,000 times. I’ve successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work.”

So Far, Smart Watches Are Pretty Dumb

meta.watchx299In theory, smart watches offer a smoother, more natural way of checking information than pulling out a smartphone. The act of glancing at your watch is a commonly accepted social custom, and it’s intriguing that an old form factor could come back to prominence. It’s just that now we want to see more at a glance than simply the time.

Unfortunately, the first smart watches are too much like the Graves watch: complicated in a way that makes them more curiosities than helpful tools. Their manufacturers, trying to please as many people as possible, have turned them into Swiss Army knives—neat at first, but not really fantastic at anything, and ultimately destined to be ignored or replaced by a simpler, sharper blade.
