To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Hobbit Ticket

[Philip Lelyveld comment: 30 out of 35, BUT he reviewed the 24 fps version, NOT the 48 fps version.  That could be another story.]

Queen in 3D debut for Xmas message

THE Queen will appear in 3D for the first time to deliver her Christmas message this year.

She will make history as she becomes the first Royal to appear in the new format in her Christmas Day speech, after Prince William refused to allow 3D cameras to film his wedding last year.

The 86-year-old monarch was filmed by the hi-tech cameras last Friday. They will make the Queen seem more life-like to those watching on a 3D television. Most 3D TVs require special glasses.

“LIFE OF PI” WROTE ANOTHER PAGE OF THE 3D GRAMMAR

After the successful debuts of "Life of Pi", director Ang Lee ("Brokeback Mountain," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") said in a recent interview to FastCoCreate: "3D is a film language that’s not established, but when looking at the water I don’t think we could have pulled this movie off in 2D”.

In another video talk (here under), James Cameron and Ang Lee discuss the use of 3D in "Life of Pi". The movie is standing out because of its exceptional use of technology, including stereoscopic 3D, CGI sky, and CGI tigers...

Behind the rise of the 3D printing revolution

[Philip Lelyveld comment: this is a good overview article, but it leaves out the publicly traded 3D printer companies.]

It probably won’t come as a surprise to read that the term ’3D printing’ was coined at MIT. In 1995, grad students Tim Anderson and Jim Bredt hacked an inkjet printer to spew a binding solution onto powder to create 3D shapes. After a time, the experiments became a business and Bredt and Anderson founded Z Corporation which was acquired by 3D Systems in January this year.

Charity buys 3D equipment to entertain children in hospital

The equipment is already proving very popular with the young patients as there are a variety of short 3D programmes available. The features range from exciting rollercoaster rides to calm underwater fish scenes and winter wonderlands.

Staff have noticed how the children appear more relaxed and less conscious of their discomforts when they are enthralled by the programmes on the 3D distraction equipment.

Lytro re-shoots pics as 3D clay scenes

Okay, this strikes me as one of the better marketing ideas I’ve seen in the photo business in, like, ever.

For a few days, selected shots — even old treasured images — will be “Lytro-ized.”

Lytro is working with Screen Novelties, the demented brains behind the satirical Robot Chicken show [really — it’s demented] who will model the people and settings of a photo — and then shoot that with a new Lytro camera!
