NBC Sports Chief Prefers HD To 3D TV

Add NBC Sports Chairman Mark Lazarus to the list of executives casting doubt on the future of 3D TV. Lazarus believes the sports TV industry might jump over it to a degree and shift focus to the emerging ultra-HD format.

Sony and LG are among the manufacturers moving to launch sets with ultra-HD or 4K capabilities, meaning programming can be seen with four times the picture quality of HD.

As for 3D, Lazarus said there is a future, but “I just don’t know how bright it is.” NBC did offer Olympics coverage in the format, but Lazarus said the company will not be a pacesetter.

Monty Python Returns in 3D!

Monty Python is back... mostly... with A Liar's Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python's Graham Chapman, a new 3D animated film tha reunites John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam and the late Graham Chapman, who recorded his part in the adaptation of his autobiography as an audio book before his death in 1989. What Eric Idle was doing when all this was going on is uncertain. He was not part of the original announcement in 2011, but producers had said they were "working on him."

MADAM BUTTERFLY SHOWN WITH AURO 3D SOUND AND REALD 3D IN CANADA

Barco (Kortrijk, Belgium) announces that its Auro 11.1 sound system will play a starring role in select showings of “Madam Butterfly 3D”. Barco’s Auro 11.1 will provide an exceptionally immersive 3D audio experience for several upcoming screenings of the film at the Landmark Xtreme Cinema in West Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.

Screenings are scheduled on September 5, 9 and 10, 2012, and tickets are now on-sale.

For ”Madam Butterfly 3D”, RealD and Barco collaborated to combine ultra-bright, high-resolution 3D images with 3D audio to deliver an even more captivating experience for the Canadian debut at West Kelowna. This collaboration marks another highlight in the short, yet successful history of Auro 11.1, which is experiencing rapid global adoption.

3D SERIES TRIES TO GET KICKSTARTER FUNDING

Sawdust Productions, an international consortium of three Los Angeles and Montreal-based production companies, has announced the launch of “SAWDUST,” the first 3D television series to be shot in 3D and 2D. The pilot for the half-hour episodic drama, set within the world of a depression-era, 1930s circus, is being funded through the crowd-sourcing platform Kickstarter.

Cirque du Soleil 3D fantasy film to open Tokyo fest

"Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away," a 3D fantasy film executive-produced by "Avatar" director James Cameron, will open the Tokyo International Film Festival on October 20, organizers said on Wednesday.

Written and directed by Andrew Adamson, who helmed the first two "Chronicles of Narnia" movies, Worlds Away follows a young couple that becomes separated and must journey through dreamlike worlds of Cirque du Soleil to find each other.

The film, which makes its world premiere at the Tokyo festival screening out of competition, incorporates performances shot in 3D from actual shows by the circus-arts entertainers.
