Nervous System’s Ethereal 3D-Printed LED Leaf Lamps Shine Light on Natural Design
3D-printing design studio Nervous System just unveiled a stunning series of digitally printed lamps at this year's International Contemporary Furniture Fair that are inspired by the beautiful branching patterns of veins in leaves. Befitting the biomimetic design, the lamps are dubbed Hyphae. The delicately formed lamps perfectly balance high-tech manufacturing techniques with natural forms, and their green credentials go beyond biomimicry and zero-waste manufacturing - each lamp is fitted with an energy-efficient 3 watt LED bulb, for ambient illumination with very little energy use.

Will 3D printers make food sustainable?
Andrew Purvis investigates whether 3D printers, artificial meat and GM can reduce food’s future environmental footprint
Before the end of the year, if Professor Mark Post of Maastricht University gets his way, the world’s first test-tube burger will be flame-grilled by Heston Blumenthal at The Fat Duck in Bray and served to a celebrity guest. Meals at this restaurant don’t come cheap, but this one will be the climax of a €250,000 research project – and a milestone in Post’s quest to find new ways of feeding the world, without destroying the planet.
His petri-dish patty will be made from a mixture of fat and cow muscle grown from stem cells in a culture of foetal calf serum (that’s blood plasma without the clotting agents) – a technology trialled in February. ...
Meanwhile, at Cornell University in New York, PhD candidate Jeffrey Lipton has developed a 3D food printer that lays down liquid versions of foods, dot by dot and layer by layer, to build up edible meals. “So far we have printed everything from chocolate, cheese and hummus to scallops, turkey and celery”, he says. At present, the technology uses liquid or melted versions of conventionally produced ingredients, but the aim is to create a range of ‘food inks’ made from hydrocolloids – substances that form gels with water. Homaru Cantu, a chef who has used the printer to make sushi, thinks this could have big implications for sustainability, not least because there would be no prepping of fresh ingredients, and therefore no food waste. ...

Men In Black III 3-D Release: Sony Pictures in Standoff with Cinemas over 3-D Glass Payment
[IB Times]
...
Cinemas were paying half of the ticket fee to RealD, technology supplier of the movie while 40 percent of the cost was borne by studios.
RealD is the global licensor ofstereoscopic (three-dimensional), or 3D, technologies. It also supplies 3D eye wears, display and gaming technologies to electronic manufacturers, content producers and distributors.
In most US cinemas, 3D glasses are provided by RealD.
Sony wants the cinemas to foot the bill completely which have led to a standoff between the two, according to the Bloomberg report. For the cinemas, it would amount to substantial reduction in their profits they get from charging higher prices for the 3D shows.
Industry watchers believe that the dispute will be settled as the release date approaches and they predict the possible outcome as the studio bearing the cost. They point out a similar dispute between Twentieth Century Fox and the cinemas at the time of the release of "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" and Fox relented then. ...
The movie premiered on the world's biggest 3D screen in Berlin on May 14. The left and right eye images were projected with four Sony 4K SRX-R320 projectors. Sony Pictures was awarded Guinness World Record for its giant 26m x 14m 4K 3D projection of the "Men In Black III".

3D mini cinemas become a new trend (Viet Nam)
[Viet Nam Net]
Because of the cheap price and wide range of selections, 3D cinema cafes have been attracting many young people.
These small shops require reservations, but allow customers to watch the movies when they want, and often offer upwards of 60 3D and 200 HD titles to choose from. Drinks are also available.
"It just feels more private and comfortable than a theater," one customer said.
This type of cine-cafe is a business that seems to be catching on in Hanoi. Many have opened on Khuong Trung, Quan Hoa and Vong Street. The prices are mostly determined by room size. A small room for two usually goes for VND30-50,000 (USD1.4-2.4) per hour, while a large room for eight for VND50-100,000 (USD2.4-4.8) per hour.
Nguyen Tien Dat, the owner of one of these shops, said that the idea was to make a more comfortable environment for watching films. "At first business was not so good. But when I decided to add drinks and 3D films it really started to pick up. 3D movies have been popular for more than a year now, but not everyone can afford theatre tickets. With our service all you have to do is call and book a room. Our title list is readily available, so customers make a reservation, and when the parties come there is no waiting around. They just enter their rooms and enjoy," he said. ...

Brazilian pics vie with Hollywood for box office share
Hollywood pics are performing increasingly well in Brazil, compensating for the decline of local movies.
In the first quarter of this year, the country's total box office rose 8.7% to 359.2 million reals ($197.4 million), thanks to the 24.1% growth of the combined B.O. of all foreign pics and in spite of the sharp 67.1% fall on the combined B.O. of domestic movies.
The same trend was registered last year, when Brazil's total B.O. increased 12.3%. The 21% rise in foreign pics' B.O. offset the 27.3% decline of the local pics' B.O. The market share of local pics fell to just 11.6% in 2011, from 17.9% in 2010.
Industry watchers say the fortunes of local pics could turn upward in the future but, for now, Hollywood dominates. ...
Brazilian producers also do not compete for the fast growing local 3D market, says Sergio Sa Leitao, president of Rio municipal government funding company RioFilme. Mariana Caltabiano's "Brazil Animated," released in January 2011, is the only 3D local pic and no important Brazilian 3D pics are scheduled to open this year.
But the demand is there. The combined B.O. of all 3D pics in Brazil rose 40.5% in the first quarter of 2012 against the same period last year. Their market share of the total B.O. reached 29% in the period....

Angry Birds Spreads Wings With An Ambitious Jewelry Line
... Now a new Angry Birds jewelry line is debuting with a decidedly upscale slant. The launch product is a silver ring designed by a notedFinnish designer Kristian Saarikorpi. Mr. Saarikorpi has earlier worked as the head designer at Tillander, a house playfully described as Scandinavia’s Tiffany. He was recently named Finland’s Goldsmith of the Year. It’s an unusually sophisticated pedigree for the mobile game merchandising business – and it reflects the global ambitions of the start-up company behind the new product line.
Primesmith, the next-gen jewelry company collaborating with Rovio on the accessory line, is based in Fiskars, Finland. Fiskars has gained a tiny measure of global fame as the home of some of the most famous scissors designers in the world. The goal of Primesmith is to help various digital franchises to branch out to real world merchandising via quality jewelry. ...
