The business of art, and the art of business

Colin Rhys has got it figured out. At 23, he has successfully launched and promoted his own art gallery, and hops planes — whenever he feels like it, really — to far-off destinations to sling art to his many clients around the globe. He’s got no boss, no bedtime, and certainly nothing better to do.

Rhys owns and operates Rhys Gallery, in Boston’s elite, artsy South End. It’s an open, airy, 2,500 sq. ft. street-corner gallery that exhibits mostly paintings and 3D installations by artists from all over the world. It’s on the far fringes of the neighborhood — right across from the biggest homeless shelter in town — but he could care less about local clientele. When you’ve got buyers and artists waiting on you from Moscow, Berlin or Dubai, who would?

Essentially, Rhys — a youngin’ by age but a cool, calculated and driven businessman by rhetoric — sells art.  ...

Are you an artist yourself?

No, I’m just in the business of slinging art.   ...

So why, then, the business of art?

Well, my background was a double degree in business and in art — I went to Tufts and the Museum School — and marketing is my life. There are actually some artists that won’t work with me, because I push their work way too hard. I push their work like you would be launching a new product for a new company.  ...

Video: Curvy touchscreens becoming a reality

A company called Atmel is pioneering what could be a revolution in mobile displays.

The company has created a new technology called XSense, which is an incredibly thin film-based touch sensor that can actually be curved and manipulated in ways never before used in a commercial device.

Atmel is not one of the sexiest or most well-known firms in the world of mobile technology, but it does have an important role in some of the most popular devices on the market today, like Samsung's Galaxy Note phone and Galaxy Tab tablet.

This latest creation will, for example, allow manufacturers to create smartphones that have no edge; the entire device will be touch-enabled. Or it could create curved phones that don't conform to the traditional "candy bar" profiles.  ...

3D INFOGRAPHIC PROJECTION MAPPING IN GRAND CENTRAL STATION!

Fancy seeing the world’s first 3D projection-mapped infographic animations?

Along with ad agency DDB London and the Financial Times, we helped gather data and shape some of the stories for three short infographic films which will be projection-mapped on the inside of Grand Central Station in New York! Go see!

(Projection-mapping throws a 3D model of an environment or space back on itself in order to pull off some incredible visual effects).

I’ve not seen the finished films yet. They’ll be unveiled tomorrow (Tuesday 27th March) and run continuously for three days. Hashtag #FTGW. But project-mapping ninjas the Klip Collective have an incredible reputation for large scale awesomeness.

There’s a preview (and a picture of me doing Karate) running at http://www.ft.com/graphicworld.

Light-Up Psychedelic Clothes Designed To Freak Out Squares And Protect Cyclists

The Superheroe is the brainchild of Wolfgang Langeder, CEO and designer of Utope clothing, working in conjunction with the stretchable circuits division of Fraunhofer IZM. The cotton jacket integrates stretchy 64 RGB-LED flexible displays across its front, shoulders and back. These displays create a pattern that changes based on readings from an integrated acceleration sensor and 3D gyroscope, allowing the clothing to match the movements of the rider. It can even sync with a smartphone and display a special pattern whenever there’s an incoming call.

The Altervision 3D Blacklight Experience blows people’s minds!

Even the best pictures or videos can’t prepare you for the amazement you will feel once inside A3D. Put on the glasses and enter our installation and you will immediately realize just how magical a place this is.

With butterflies fluttering out from an enchanted forest, dragons dueling, the clown’s mouth through which you just walked, the tracks on the floor that seem to float in midair, the word that comes to mind is WOW! Once inside, you are immersed with childlike amazement, in this fluorescent painted black light utopia. You find yourself reaching out to touch things that appear to be within reach as you experience the three dimensional art all around you – on the walls, the floor and the ceiling. Eventually, you exit through the stargate as you leave this vibrant world behind.

The A3D installation is the perfect addition to any special event looking for a unique, interactive experience for its guests. It appeals to both young and old, alike. Corporate events, VIP areas, music/art festivals, weddings and more, are the perfect settings for A3D to transform an event into an unforgettable experience. A3D can be set up indoors or outdoors and has a footprint of approximately 25’ x 25’. The size and artwork can be customized to meet your needs. All that’s required is a electrical source, the space for the installation and of course your guests, for us to add the magic of A3D to your special event.

Just for Laughs—Funny but Definitely Flimsy Souvenir From Famous World Heritage Site

The souvenir that is attracting attention is a kind of postcard sold by local vendors in Machu Picchu. And it’s no ordinary postcard. We interviewed a Japanese tourist who visited Machu Picchu to hear about it.

According to the tourist, “Local vendors at Machu Picchu suddenly come to sell you postcards on the street, but what makes these postcards different is that your picture is pasted on them.”

What is happeing here is that local vendors are arbitrarily taking pictures of visitors and pasting the pictures on regular postcards of Machu Picchu to sell to the unsuspecting visitors.

A Walk Through IPG’s Gallery of Emerging Tech

[Philip Lelyveld comment: this is a good overview of some location-based marketing technology concepts.]

The IPG Media Lab on West 33rd St. is like a mini-Consumer Electronics Show on the doorstep of New York's Penn Station. Opened four months ago in New York, after a nine-year run in L.A., it provides IPG Mediabrands clients and partner agencies with a hands-on survey of the latest personal gadgets, interactive displays, wearable devices, embedded retail tech, and set-top boxes.

But unlike CES, the Media Lab exists not only to paint the future's picture for each guest, but to translate the tangle of technology into a strategic marketing plan. ...

Among the gadgets and digital baubles Lab visitors will see:

  • A tool that uses WiFi connections to measure people walking outside Media Lab's front door. When someone comes in, that action is treated as a "conversion." In addition to being a nifty tool, the idea has a clear application for storefront marketers.
  • A "mobile bar" with QR codes, near field communication (NFC) apps, and other uses. Rosenberg says, "It's inevitable that NFC will take off. There's too much momentum behind it, and the frictionless tapping versus the download of a QR reader."
  • A facial recognition camera for retail locations. A small camera embedded in a store shelf can guess a visitor's mood by reading facial expressions. "Unlike a focus group, your face doesn't lie. The ability to use this as part of a retail case study is interesting," said Rosenberg.
  • Life-sized video chat. This installation enables face-to-face customer interactions near product displays. What brands might benefit? Think Blackberry and other advertisers that struggle to sell products at the shelf level.
  • A 3D video display that doesn't require glasses. Rosenberg: "It's good for outdoor, but you can only look at it for about 20 seconds."  ...

3D-printer with nanoscale precision (w/video)

Printing three dimensional objects with incredibly fine details is now possible using "two-photon lithography". With this technology, tiny structures on a nanometer scale can be fabricated. Researchers at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Vienna) have now made a major breakthrough in speeding up this printing technique: The high-precision-3D-printer at TU Vienna is orders of magnitude faster than similar devices (see video below). This opens up completely new areas of application, such as in medicine.

Setting a New World Record

The 3D printer uses a liquid resin, which is hardened at precisely the correct spots by a focused laser beam. The focal point of the laser beam is guided through the resin by movable mirrors and leaves behind a hardened line of solid polymer, just a few hundred nanometers wide. This fine resolution enables the creation of intricately structured sculptures...
