Virtual-Reality Projects Get Hollywood Treatment

VRC was started by four Hollywood players—Mr. Edwards, director Robert Stromberg, producer Joel Newton and executive Guy Primus—and is preparing an onslaught of content with directors such as Messrs. Scott and Spielberg.

VRC’s projects show the various genres and industries toying with the new technology, but also the economic and consumer-behavior limitations the nascent format still faces.

Some of the company’s projects include:

—“Showdown,” an immersive experience in which viewers investigate near-future crime scenes, told in 10- to 15-minute serialized segments to be sold as separate chapters.

—a virtual-reality documentary called “The Bus to Canton,” following former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome Bettis as he is inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this August.

—“There,” a theatrical feature with significant virtual-reality components directed by Mr. Stromberg, a VRC co-founder and director of Walt Disney Co.’s “Maleficent.”

VRC executives see opportunities to expand beyond Hollywood—thinking of virtual courtside seats at a Los Angeles Lakers game, re-creations of the State of the Union address from inside the U.S. Capitol, tornado-chasing across the Plains and front-row seats as Mick Jagger sings “Satisfaction.”
