New SCAD major makes immersive technology a reality

“We want everyone to be super creative and super technical at the same time. It’s absolutely critical,” said Maxine Almy, dean of the School of Digital Media. Meetings and surveys with industry experts and corporations likely to hire SCAD students upon graduation helped drive the new curriculum, Almy said. But when the university started to formulate the major, Almy realized many pertinent courses were already being offered. The new major includes 11 new courses, such as “The Immersive Revolution: Augmented to Virtual Reality” and “Game Engine Applications for Immersive Computing.”

SCAD has been incorporating Augmented and Virtual Reality into its communications and creative efforts since 2015, when it included VR goggles in the acceptance packages it sent to prospective students. It wants to be on the cutting edge of immersive technology. In 2016, it supported a collaboration among students from 14 different programs that culminated in a Virtual Reality 360-degree short film, “Say it with Music.” And a game called “TSA Frisky” launched at SCAD in 2017 is available to the public on the Steam Entertainment Network.
