Stretchable, Synthetic Skin Lets Users ‘Feel’ Objects In Virtual Reality

“Right now, sensing is done mostly by vision. We hardly ever measure touch in real life. This skin is a way to allow ourselves and machines to measure tactile interactions in a way that we now currently use the cameras in our phones. It’s using vision to measure touch. This is the most convenient and practical way to do it in a scalable way.”

“VR and AR immersion is based on motion capture. Touch is barely there at all. Let’s say you want to have an augmented reality simulation that teaches you how to fix your car or change a tire. If you had a glove or something that could measure pressure, as well as motion, that augmented reality visualization could say, ‘Turn and then stop, so you don’t overtighten your lug nuts.’ There’s nothing out there that does that right now, but this is an avenue to do it.”

Facebook is now using AI to sort content for quicker moderation

... the algorithms judge various elements in any given post in concert, trying to work out what the image, caption, poster, etc., reveal together. If someone says they’re selling a “full batch” of “special treats” accompanied by a picture of what look to be baked goods, are they talking about Rice Krispies squares or edibles? The use of certain words in the caption (like “potent”) might tip the judgment one way or the other.

Vatican Library Enlists Artificial Intelligence to Protect Its Digitized Treasures

Founded by University of Cambridge mathematicians, Darktrace uses artificial intelligence (A.I.) modeled on the human immune system to detect abnormal activity in the Vatican’s digital systems, writes Brian Boucher for artnet News. On average, the A.I. system defends the library against 100 security threats each month, according to a Darktrace statement.

“While physical damage is often clear and immediate, an attack of this kind wouldn’t have the same physical visibility, and so has the potential to cause enduring and potentially irreparable harm, not only to the archive but to the world’s historical memory,” Miceli tells the Observer.

He adds, “These attacks have the potential to impact the Vatican library’s reputation—one it has maintained for hundreds of years—and have significant financial ramifications that could impact our ability to digitize the remaining manuscripts.”

Though the Vatican Library dates back to the days of the first Roman Catholic popes, little is known about the contents of its collections prior to the 13th century, per Encyclopedia Britannica. Pope Nicholas V (1447–1455) greatly expanded the collection, and by 1481, the archive held the most books of any institution in the Western world, according to the Library of Congress.

To date, about a quarter of the library’s 80,000 manuscripts have been digitized.

The library isn’t the only section of the Vatican that’s prone to cyber breaches. As the New York Times reported in July, Chinese hackers infiltrated the Holy See’s computer networks this summer ahead of sensitive talks in Beijing over the appointment of bishops—part of ongoing discussions that will determine how the Catholic Church operates in China.

Oculus Pushes More Accessible VR Experiences With New Accessibility-Focused Virtual Reality Checks For Developers

The company described the VRCs as “a set of technical recommendations designed to help developers create more accessible VR software” that focus on various aspects of accessible design: visual, audible, interaction, and more. The goal with these Checks, Oculus said, is to encourage third-party developers to seriously consider making their apps more accessible to every user. VRCs typically are required criteria, but Oculus is instead casting these accessibility Checks as recommendations.

Why AI can’t move forward without diversity, equity, and inclusion

Evolve, presented by VentureBeat on December 8th, is a 90-minute event exploring bias, racism, and the lack of diversity across AI product development and management, and why these issues can’t be ignored.

“A lot has been happening in 2020, from working remotely to the Black Lives Matter movement, and that has made everybody realize that diversity, equity, and inclusion is much more important than ever,” says Huma Abidi, senior director of AI software products and engineering at Intel – and one of the speakers at Evolve. “Organizations are engaging in discussions around flexible working, social justice, equity, privilege, and the importance of DEI.”

An algorithm used by hospitals was shown to prioritize the care of healthier white patients over sicker Black patients who needed more attention. In Oakland, an AI-powered software piloted to predict areas of high crime turned out to be actually tracking areas with high minority populations, regardless of the crime rate.

This can be addressed with regulation, and the inclusion of AI ethics principles in research and development, around responsible AI, fairness, accountability, transparency, and explainability, she says.

Virtual reality forests could help understanding of climate change

Date:November 11, 2020

Source:Penn State

Summary:The effects of climate change are sometimes difficult to grasp, but now a virtual reality forest, created by geographers, can let people walk through a simulated forest of today and see what various futures may hold for the trees.

The effects of climate change are sometimes difficult to grasp, but now a virtual reality forest, created by geographers, can let people walk through a simulated forest of today and see what various futures may hold for the trees.

The virtual-reality experience takes the extensive climate change models, sophisticated vegetation models and ecological models and creates a 2050 forest that people can experience by walking through it, investigating the tree types and understory, and seeing the changes.

To own an AR future, Niantic wants to build a smarter map of the world

Niantic  is continuing to bet heavily on the idea that it knows where consumer computing is headed, namely toward augmented reality.

A report from the firm suggests that the title has pulled in more than $1 billion in revenue since the start of the year, a marked increase since 2019 that might be surprising, given the social effects of a pandemic. Those revenues have allowed Niantic to be one of the more active acquirers in the AR infrastructure space, buying up small buzzy AR startups like Escher Reality, Matrix Mill and, most recently, 6D.ai.

Since the acquisition, Niantic has been integrating the tech into their developer platform and has been aiming to juice the technology with their own advances in semantic understanding so they can not only quickly gather what the geometry of a space looks like, but also peer into the context of what the objects are that make up that 3D mesh.

The ultimate goal of this data collection, the startup says, is to build an ever-updating 3D map of the world

As users gain access to more advanced tech like the lidar sensor inside the new iPhone 12 Pro, it’s likely that Niantic will gain access to more quality data themselves.

Don Carson discusses virtual reality in themed entertainment

“One of the great things about using VR is that no matter where you are in the process, you can visit your model,” Carson said. He showed a video of virtually “walking through” his attraction, demonstrating how you can look at your project from different angles and see every detail, just like walking through it in real life.

This project was completed in June 2020, two months after it began. It took the hard and dedicated work of a very small team to complete. “We did it as a passion project,” Carson said. “I wasn’t paying anyone.”

Although, it may not be as prestigious as some of Carson’s other projects, like Splash Mountain, this project is both helpful to those new to theme park design. Now they can learn more about the project and utilize a new tool from the industry: virtual reality.

“We as storytellers have a new medium [with virtual reality],” Carson said. “Doing an entire dark ride with 4 people in 2 months couldn’t be fathomed before, but now it can.”

Meet the Cat Who Turned Four Seasons Total Landscaping into a Virtual Reality Hangout for Furries

Two nights ago, one of his friends tipsily tweeted, “Four Seasons Total Landscaping needs to be a VRChat world. Okay I'm going to bed.”

It seemed like a tossed-off joke, but inspiration had struck. After working through the night, Coopertom was ready to unveil his gift to the world: A fully realized virtual reality version of the parking lot where Rudy Giuliani held the world’s stupidest press conference. And because it was built by furries, for furries, in a year when every furry con in the world had to go online, furries flocked to it for an instantly-viral video of unbridled purity. Four Seasons Total Landscaping is now a furry.
