Virtual reality holidays in jail as prisoners rewarded for good behaviour with VR headsets

Lags who follow the rules will be allowed to use the headsets to go on "fantasy" holidays to far-flung destinations like China, Australia and Peru.

The move comes as jail bosses look to tackle soaring levels of violence and drug abuse in Britain's prisons.

Other programmes could include workplace experience simulators, such as visiting a VR construction site, to prepare them for life on the outside.

A prison source told the paper: "Governors are being encouraged to try all sorts of ways to improve behaviour. This is a bold move but it is seen as worth a go.

This stage production using VR and compelling storytelling blew our mind at The National Arts Festival

The basic plot, without giving away too much, is that a young girl disappeared over two decades ago and new evidence emerges that reopens the investigation. Half of the story is told in flashbacks while the other half is conveyed by an actress just a few feet away from the audience. How it worked logistically was that we each sat in swivel chairs with headphones and a virtual reality headset. A scene would play in the headsets, and then a command with a countdown would pop up and tell us when to take off the headsets and watch the actress.

Some in my group found the virtual reality headsets a bit overwhelming and disorientating while others found having to step back and forth between the two worlds too much of a hassle. I found it to be incredibly interesting, and I loved how it enveloped me into the production.

Vancouver startup RealWear raises $80 million for augmented reality hardhat

HRN4L5YGANFGLECYOZMZTURQ7AA quartet of industrial companies, led by a big Massachusetts-based equipment company called Teradyne, announced Monday they are putting $80 million in to a Vancouver startup that makes augmented reality headsets built into hardhats.

RealWear has now raised $100 million altogether and its $1,500 devices are used by a wide variety of industrial companies, including BMW, Colgate, Shell and Exxon.

Monday’s investment is among the biggest investments in a Silicon Forest startup in many years and instantly makes the three-year-old company among the region’s best-funded young companies.

RealWear had eight local employees when it moved to Vancouver but now employs 110, including 52 in Vancouver. Lowery said he plans to hire 100 more by the end of next year.

“It may make a lot of sense for us to locate a software group down in Portland,” he said. “Software folks are very lifestyle oriented.”
