Hyatt Taps Into Virtual Reality to Hire 10,000 Young Workers

The unemployment rate may be at a record low, but there are still vast pockets of workers in the United States struggling to find jobs.virtual reality

Global hotel chain Hyatt Corp. is tapping into one of these talent pools with RiseHY, its new community-hiring program, which uses virtual reality and gaming to introduce young people looking for career opportunities to the hospitality industry.

As part of the initiative, Hyatt hotels around the world have committed to hiring 10,000 “opportunity youth” — people ages 18 to 24 who are neither in school nor working — by 2025.

Opportunity youth often come from disadvantaged neighborhoods and have limited work experience and education. “Hospitality jobs aren’t even on their radar,” Schultz said. When Schultz and Williams-Lee began designing the project, they knew they would need to close that gap and find a way to help young people imagine building a career in hospitality.

To give them a sense of what life would be like working in a hotel, they worked with a vendor to build a virtual reality app, called YouVisit, where candidates can take a virtual guided tour of a hotel, see what workers do and learn what’s required of different roles including room attendants, hostesses, wait staff and concierge. “The virtual reality lets them see what their career path could be, and to think about whether this is a good fit for them,” Williams-Lee said.

VRTIGO lets you test your nerves in virtual reality

vrtigoletsyoWhy do some people react more strongly than others when faced with the unknown? Researchers at EPFL's Laboratory of Behavioral Genetics, headed by Professor Carmen Sandi, have set out to learn more with a new virtual reality program. Their system evaluates how users' personality traits and prior experience influence their responses to anxiety-inducing situations. Designed to be tested on a large sample of volunteers, it will be available for visitors to try out during the Geneva International Film Festival on 5–10 November, where it will be featured in the Digital Out of Competition category.

Crucial data for research

The VRTIGO experience, although amusing, provides valuable data for scientists studying human anxiety. The data are completely anonymous; volunteers are asked to fill out a short questionnaire on their antecedents and emotional state. During the experiment, the system's sensors relay information about users' physiological responses, while accelerometers track their body positions, movements and the directions in which they are looking. Samples are also taken of ' saliva to determine their cortisol levels – an indicator of how much stress they feel.

"These tests carried out among the general public will give us data from people of many different ages and backgrounds, and help advance our research on this issue," says Studer. The research team hopes to publish their findings in 2019.

EFF Unveils Virtual Reality Tool To Help People Spot Surveillance Devices in Their Communities

Spot the Surveillance, which works best with a VR headset but will also work on standard browsers, places users in a 360-degree street scene in San Francisco. In the scene, a young resident is in an encounter with police. Users are challenged to identify surveillance tools by looking around the scene. The experience takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

The surveillance technologies featured in the scene include a body-worn camera, automated license plate readers, a drone, a mobile biometric device, and pan-tilt-zoom cameras. The project draws from years of research gathered by EFF in its Street-Level Surveillance project, which shines a light on how police use, and abuse, technology to spy on communities.

Created by EFF’s engineering and design team, the Stop the Surveillance VR experience can be found at https://eff.org/spot-vr.

AR ‘flight simulator for surgeons’ offers easy access to valuable training with precise haptic feedback on Mac

We believe that every surgeon should have the opportunity to rehearse, practise and test themselves within a safe, controllable space that is as close to real life as possible and is within an arm’s reach of their work place.

Fundamental Surgery is a software platform that takes advantage of readily available virtual reality hardware combined with cutting edge haptics (the sense of touch) to create a simulation system that can be used on any modern PC set up, even a laptop.

Fundamental Surgery just last week was adopted by Mayo Clinic. The software was also the winner of the 2018 Auggie Award for “The Most Impactful Breakthrough” at the Augmented World Expo.

Oregon Senator Proposes a Consumer Data Protection Bill

Internet_Smartphones_Social_Apps-2Oregon Democratic Senator Ron Wyden drafted a data privacy bill akin to the recent General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) legislation in Europe. Dubbed the Consumer Data Protection Act, Wyden’s bill would give users more control over selling and sharing their data, and would give the Federal Trade Commission authority to set privacy and security standards and fine those companies that do not protect consumer data. One provision is a “Do Not Track” feature that would allow people to opt out of being tracked.

Digital Trends reports that the latter is “the digital equivalent of the popular Do Not Call Registry established by the FTC in 2003, which allows people to opt out of receiving phone calls from telemarketers.”

Companies would have to offer alternative payment options “such as subscription fees instead of ad-supported ‘free’ models.”

At Georgetown Law’s Communication & Techology Clinic, teaching fellow and attorney Lindsey Barrett tweeted that Wyden’s bill “injects sorely needed accountability” into today’s flawed “information ecosystem.” But Rendition InfoSec co-founder Jake Williams, a National Security Agency veteran, noted that the bill is unlikely to pass. “Even if it does, it won’t mean what you might think,” he said. “It won’t create a SOX-style environment around cyber. Sorry.”
