She-Ra’s New Virtual Reality Website Offers a Glimpse Into the Show’s Majestic World

You can’t yet watch She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, but you can briefly visit its world.

Today, Dreamworks shared the new promotional website for the upcoming Netflix show, which has a pretty interesting wrinkle: it’s available in virtual reality.

Promotional VR experiences are nothing new, but they’ve usually been pretty heavy duty, built for dedicated VR hardware or promo installations. This, though, is light and breezy and easy to run, and it’s a delightful taste of the new show’s aesthetic. So far as marketing goes, it’s good stuff.

Catch the best of French virtual reality cinema and theatre at Hong Kong’s Digital November

According to Louis Bonneau, an audiovisual officer with the Consulate, VR is becoming a key market for the cinema industry in France and worldwide, though “in Hong Kong, we thought the VR market for cultural purposes is pretty small and limited,” he says.

“We felt that bringing this kind of content to Hong Kong would allow the general public to know more about French creativity in the field of cinema through new ways of telling a story,” adds Bonneau.

One of the highlights of Digital November is an immersive theatre performance that mixes live performance with virtual reality. The Cliffs of V, a VR production by French company Gengiskhan, is one of the first immersive VR experiences of its kind.

Alteration by Jérôme Blanquet will touch on the theme of artificial intelligence. I Saw the Future by François Vautier delves into Arthur C. Clarke’s vision of the future. Notes on Blindness: Into Darkness by Arnaud Colinart, Amaury La Burthe, Peter Middleton and James Spinney examines John Hull’s sensory and psychological experience of blindness.

Other events include the French Tech Tour China 2018 Immersion programme with French innovative companies organised by Business France and Bpifrance; the Hackathon on Corporate Social Responsibility: “Innovation Contest 4CSRtech” co-organised by Orange at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Clear Water Bay; and an E-Learning Workshop: Teaching French with digital photography at Alliance Francaise Jordan Centre in Jordan.

Digital November, October 26 to December 4.

Tech it out! Virtual-reality hub opens in Navy Yard

dtg-virtual-reality-hub-in-navy-yard-2018-11-02-bk01_sA new hub offering virtual- and augmented-reality experiences to students and professionals opened at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Wednesday, funded by a multi-million-dollar investment from the city that officials said is worth every penny because the space will produce the future leaders of the fast-developing industry.

“All of you know what a rapidly growing sector augmented and virtual reality is,” said Julie Menin, the head of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, which ponied up some of the taxpayer dollars the city kicked in to build the facility. “We’re really looking to capitalize on that growth in startups in this field and most importantly ensuring we create a pipeline of talent to enter in these fields.”

Menin’s agency and the Economic Development Corporation doled out $5.6 million to fund the so-called RLab that Mayor DeBlasio last year tapped leaders of New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering, headquartered in America’s Downtown, to create and run.

Walmart’s test store for new technology, Sam’s Club Now, opens next week in Dallas

dtx-sams-1086Walmart’s warehouse club, Sam’s Club is preparing to open the doors at a new Dallas area store that will serve as a testbed for the latest in retail technology. Specifically, the retailer will test out new concepts like mobile checkout, an Amazon Go-like camera system for inventory management, electronic shelf labels, wayfinding technology for in-store navigation, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence-infused shopping, among other things.  ...

Meanwhile, the app will allow Sam’s Club to test augmented reality as a way of highlighting “stories’ about the products being sold and their features, as well as providing a way to find out how items are sourced. This seems more gimmicky, though, as it’s unlikely that customers are interested in this sort of “infotainment” when just trying to get their shopping done.

Down the road, a system of over 700 cameras will be used to help the retailer manage the inventory and optimize the store layout.

On the shelves, it’s also testing electronic shelf labels that will instantly update prices, eliminating the need to print out paper signage.

These are not third-party systems, the retailer says.

The store plans to rapidly iterate on new and different experiences across computer vision, A.I., A.R., machine learning, and robotics.

Dixie Elementary art students bring pumpkins to life with augmented reality app

5bd0ec7dcd766.image-2Art teacher Amanda Dunn-Meelkop introduced students to an app called Quiver that allowed them to draw a jack-o'-lantern and bring it to life with an iPad as students geared up for Halloween.

The digital wizardry was an exercise in texturing for the students, but they were having so much fun it didn't feel like learning.

Glimpse: Truly Useful Augmented Reality is Coming. We’re Not Ready.

Soon we'll be using augmented reality more seamlessly than ever before. And that means we need ground rules for how to not be creeps.

Analog Boy, an episode of Glimpse, a new original sci-fi series from Futurism Studios (a division of Futurism LLC) and DUST, shows one potential version of a future world full of augmented reality wearables.

Before the technology truly becomes ubiquitous, we need to have a serious look at how we want to shape AR — and the ethical lines we don’t want it to cross.

But there’s a dark side to it, too — bringing AR into a world dominated by tech companies that collect ever-growing amounts of our personal data means being comfortable with the fact that other people will be able to interact with us in new ways, probably without us ever knowing.

Congress has recently held Facebook and Twitter accountable for their role in the 2016 presidential election. It’s not a stretch to think the companies that might be bringing AR into maturity might find themselves in a new age of intense scrutiny.
