Everything About How 3D Printing Works: Part 2
How to create a 3D object
There are three ways to create virtual 3D objects to print.
First and most difficult is to start from scratch using free computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software such as 123D from AutoDesk (a MakerBot partner), OpenSCAD, Sculptris, GrabCAD, Blender, 3D Tin and Google SketchUp. Once your object is designed, you bring into MakerBot's MakerWare 3D printer-setting software – but this DIY object design creation method is only for the technologically adventurous.
The second way to create a virtual 3D object is to scan an existing object to create a duplicate or a variation on a theme.

Google Joins PayPal-Backed Effort to Kill the Password
According to the FIDO Alliance site, the group’s mission is “to change the nature of online authentication.” It lists three objectives:
1) “Developing technical specifications that define an open, scalable, interoperable set of mechanisms that reduce the reliance on passwords to authenticate users.”
2) “Operating industry programs to help ensure successful worldwide adoption of the Specifications.”
3) “Submitting mature technical Specification(s) to recognized standards development organization(s) for formal standardization.”

4K UHD TV Makers Must Avoid Mistakes Made With 3D
Some mistakes made during the launch of 3D TV include the substandard quality of upconverted content; the lack of compelling content; poor product demonstration and presentation at retail; and a general overpromise and under-delivery of the 3D TV consumer experience.
In terms of 4K UHD content, Gray said broadcast standardization has started but full commercialization of content is about two years away. Until then, most 4K content will be made up of graphics and delivered over the Internet.

SES claims HEVC Ultra HD first
Satellite system operator SES has teamed with Harmonic and chip-set manufacturer Broadcom to create and demonstrate ``the first Ultra-HDTV transmissions using the High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC)" from Astra’s 19.2 degrees European hot spot.
Why This Is Important: SES says using HEVC compression improves transmission capacity by some 50 percent compared to previous Ultra HD deployments using MPEG-4 AVC (H.264). It hopes the standard will ultimately become the compression system of choice by TV operators broadcasting Ultra HD.

The Tupac Hologram: One Year Later
Although some people were pleasantly surprised by the Tupac projection, there are others who felt it tainted the artistry, or some who were just plain ol’ creeped out by it. This raises the ultimate question, Who can do what with the artists’ image in the event of their death?
Graphic companies who plan on re-enacting their own holograms should seek
permission from the estate, right of copyright, and information on right of publicity and false sponsorship and false endorsement.
“I wouldn’t mind it happening to me because that only means I left a dent in the game enough for them to want to bring me back. But if I’m still living, I’m against it. I don’t want to see a younger version of me up there,” Crooked I laughs. “It might be that way soon. What happens when the whole crowd is a hologram? What happens when nobody is going to crowds physically?”

CinemaCon: Issue Brewing Over Proposed Immersive Sound Standards
During Wedensday’s sound panel, Mark Collins, director of projection technology at Marcus Theatres, said: “We are sometimes getting 12 different Digital Cinema Packages (the digital equivalent to a film print), including versions for 3D and different light levels. We’d like a common standard for sound.”
While he viewed immersive audio as the “next step” in large-format theaters, he asserted that “[exhibitors] are looking at a considerable cost” for such installation, and he therefore believes standards are key because “we have to know we are making a long-term investment.”
Speaking Wednesday at CinemaCon, SMPTE committee chair Brian Vessa -- who is executive director of digital audio mastering at Sony Pictures Entertainment -- urged studios and exhibitors to get together and push for a common standard, saying that this is needed for wide adoption of immersive sound.
Vessa reported that SMPTE’s early study likely will conclude in June or July, then it would take about a year to develop the common file format and probably another year to implement it into production workflow and theaters.
