From Guitar Hero to LEGO Mindstorms; E Ink to glanceable information displays, they have transformed the Lab into a factory of innovation. Overseeing it all is entrepreneur and venture capitalist Joi Ito, who sees four big trends on the horizon for 2013. Here he explains how hardware start-ups, gene printing, disruptive education, and agile processes are set to shape the future.

Editor Tim Squyres Talks Challengs of CG Tigers and 3D for ‘Life

3D films and films shot in 48 frames per second reduce the level of abstraction film creates, he notes. As technology advances, it makes the film seem more real, something which the Chinese embrace, but Americans have been slow to adopt.

3D TVs Today and 4D TVs Tomorrow

4D is about to hit some cinemas after being developed by a Japanese firm. The fourth dimension involves cinemagoers being sat in a motion-sensor chair that sees them feel during the film. This is an experience that, if a success, could be replicated in homes the world over. However, as 3D is still a relatively new innovation, there’s no reason to put those tacky 3D glasses in the bin just yet.

Dolby Atmos, 3D, ETX, not HFR, rescue Hobbit

The new Dolby Atmos immersive theater sound system is the perfect complement to 3D, demonstrated convincingly with the New Line Cinema and MGM production of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”
In fact, “Hobbit,” viewed in a theater with Atmos, 3D, and the expanded screen size of the newAMC theaters‘ proprietary ETX experience, including the first-ever “High-Frame-Rate” of 48 frames-per-second (compared to normal 24 fps), delivers the most immersive cinematic experience ever.
Those technical elements also contributed mightily to the record-setting $85 million December opening weekend in North America, and $223 million worldwide for the Warner Bros release. The cost of a ticket with premium prices to see the movie with all these formats at the AMC Ontario Mills 30 in California is $16.50, and $18.75 at the AMC Century City 15.

VR market ‘more tolerant’ than 3D sector

Gamers willing to wear 'funky' gadgets more than the average consumer, says Oculus inventor

The market for virtual reality has greater tolerance than the 3D market, which has struggled to take off in the home, claims the creator behind Oculus Rift.

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey said that his VR headset won’t suffer from the fate of reluctant consumers because its audience of gamers are more open to wearing bulky entertainment gear.

“It’s a bit of a different market. I’ve always loved 3D too; I’m on of those guys that doesn’t mind wearing glasses while I watch TV. 3D TVs give you an advantage in terms of immersion, you see things in stereo; but they don’t immerse you nearly as much as a VR headset.
