Taking 3D Shooting To The Limit — with 3 Cameras!
[Philip Lelyveld comment: shoot with multiple interoccular so you have depth for both big screen and cellphone.]
B. Sean Fairburn, SOC is an HD DP with a wide range of credits as a Director of Photography and camera operator in television, film, commercials and documentaries. Among his film credits are Windtalkers, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Expendables and The Mechanic. TV credits include Super Bowl XXXVIII, Star Trek Enterprise, House MD, American Dreams, and the documentary Inside the Space Station. As a U.S. Marine, Sean shot the beginning of Operation Iraq Freedom by mounting an HD camera on the back of a Humvee and accompanying U.S. Marines from the breach into Iraq to the streets of Baghdad. The resulting footage led to Sean being awarded an Emmy for its inclusion in Dan Rather's 2007 Combat Photography. A pioneer in shooting HD, as well as a cinematography instructor, Sean is now CEO of MIO 3D.
I'm always fascinated by the next, more difficult challenge. Anybody can be a pilot, but for me 3D has always been something more like space flight; very few people can work at the level of an astronaut. Several years ago, I was blessed to learn 3D from Peter Anderson, ASC, who's really the godfather of modern 3D production. Jim Cameron, Vince Pace, Steve Schklair, Steve Pezo, Gary Shino were all educated in 3D by him. I met Peter as an engineer, and he taught me 3D engineering and how to tune lenses and ultimately just the philosophy and concept of 3D.

Due West: Our Sex Journey 3D [China]
Opening as a reasonably amusing "American Pie"-like account of a randy Hong Kong teenager's sexual awakening, "Due West: Our Sex Journey 3D" gradually becomes flaccid as its protag enters adulthood and seeks fulfillment in bawdy houses on the mainland. A parade of buxom beauties in birthday suits guarantees robust domestic and regional B.O. for this China Digital Entertainment production, but pedestrian scripting and direction make it unlikely to outperform the company's 2011 hit, "3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy." Pic opened September 20 in H.K., Australia and New Zealand. North American release details are pending.

Giant KamerMaker 3D Printer Can Print Entire Rooms
[Philip Lelyveld comment: there is a good conceptual video in this story. No, the device they show is too small to print rooms. Closets, maybe.]
The KamerMaker is "the world’s first movable pavilion that can 3D print entire rooms of plastics." The giant 3D printer was built to demonstrate 3D printing to the public and to push the limits of the technology. It's running now in a park in Amsterdam, where DUS architects are open four days a week so that "Everyone can watch the live testing of the print techniques and contribute in the building process of the KamerMaker". It's BIG- it can turn out objects measuring up to 6.6' x 6.6' x 12' high, using PLA plastic. " The KamerMaker itself is a pavilion, that can reproduce small pavilions!"

3D Entertainment Summit 2012: a “spectacular year” worldwide
New Global 3D Market Place:
Panel Moderator, Richard Cooper, Principal Analyst from IHS Screen Digest, stated the international markets like China will incubate the growth of 3D. “China is still incredibly dominant (in 3D expansion).”
3D Hollywood Masters Panel – What Makes Good 3D?
Ms. Huggins stated, “3D needs to be invisible—we can hide the technology today.” She further explained that the cost factor for shooting does not take any longer than it would for a 2D production. “On a typical 3D production, we only added 1 1/2 pages more to our script.”
“We had down time, and it’s equal to no more, no less than a straight non-3D shoot.”
Principal Media CEO David Brenner said, “Samsung is paying up to $4,000 a minute for 3D content, and LG is paying about $1000, better than what can be expected for licensing content to a 3D channel.” The panel agreed that international markets are experiencing a growing demand for 3D, both in production and distribution.

Structural Strength for 3D Printed Works
Researchers at Purdue and Adobe's Advanced Technology Labs have jointly developed a program that automatically imparts strength to objects before they are printed.
"It runs a structural analysis, finds the problematic part and then automatically picks one of the three possible solutions," Benes said.

3D losing momentum in North American theaters
What happened to the predicted 3D revolution spurred in 2009 by James Cameron's Avatar? "3D is still growing, albeit in a mitigated way," is PwC's tepid conclusion.
On a global scale, 3D is expanding as theaters renew their infrastructure to accommodate digital technology -- especially in China, which is a driving force for 3D technology as it does not impose a cap on the number of 3D screenings.
Remakes and blockbusters
The young market for 3D movies is highly dependent on the number of films available, according to PwC. In North America, the number of films on offer is evening out: 39 films in 3D are announced for 2012, only one more than last year.
