3D: Sundance 2012’s missing dimension

Sundance 2012 does not have a 3D movie this year, but that's not meant as a snub.

Really.

Organizers are quick to point out that 3D films have been part of past festivals, including U2 3D, the first live action 3D movie from the Irish-rockers.

In fact, festival director John Cooper was at a momentary loss when asked why there wasn't any 3D films.

"We don't have any this year, do we?" he asked aloud.

Cooper says he was desperate to bring Wim Wenders 3D dance film Pina in the festival. But it was released in theaters before the festival started. ...

DIA to screen ‘(plant) 3D,’ a video that explores abandoned Packard factory

When Paul Kaiser was commissioned by the University of Michigan to create a 3D installation about Detroit, he and his creative partners were attracted, as a lot of artists are, to the ruins of the city and its industry.

"You get a sense of the past lives that were here," says Kaiser, who focused on the abandoned Packard auto factory on East Grand Boulevard for "plant (3D)," his immersive, 20-foot video projection that will have its Detroit Institute of Arts unveiling Friday. "There is evidence of human and natural activity everywhere; it's far from a no-man's-land."

The video exhibit was fashioned by computer from more than 10,000 images taken by U-M grad Kaiser, along with colleagues Mark Downie and Shelley Eshkar, at the site last July. The soundtrack mixes ambient sound recorded during the shoot.

The video, which begins screening at 1 p.m. Friday and will show continuously during museum hours through Feb. 5 in the DIA's Kresge Court, takes viewers on a 15-minute tour of the plant. Kaiser calls the images "more painterly than realistic. ... They give you a ghostly feeling of the people that were here in the past."

Special glasses are required to experience the 3D effect. Rather than show a single image, "plant (3D)" employs side-by-side screens that focus on different scenes from the plant. Kaiser believes this approach promotes viewer interaction. ...

3 ways The Great Gatsby could change 3D movies

On the surface, The Great Gatsbyseems like an unusual choice for a 3D movie. But that's precisely the kind of film that director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) is making. At first, devotees of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic — about a tangled web of New York social climbers in the Jazz Age — raised their eyebrows upon learning that the literary masterpiece was getting the 3D treatment most closely associated with Avatarand Transformers. But after a recent New York Times outlineof Luhrmann's motivations and aspirations for a 3D Gatsby, skeptics aren't just on board — they're excited. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan, The Great Gatsby will be released in December 2012. Here, three reasons it could change how 3D films are made:

1. Gatsby could prove that 3D enhances actor-driven films ...

2. Luhrmann could put 3D front and center at the Oscars ...

3. It could encourage more 3D literary adaptations  ...

Kingdom Hearts 3D to be released in Japan March 29th

The Kingdom Hearts franchise is indeed a classic among gamers, and if you want to experience the game in 3D glory on your Nintendo 3DS, its developer has revealed the released date as far as the Japanese market is concerned. For those staying in Japan and are looking forward to playing the game on their Nintendo 3DS, March 29th is the date you’ll want to mark down on your calendar.

The game will be dubbed Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance (or Kingdom Hearts 3D for those who are fans of wordplay) and should not be mistaken as Kingdom Hearts 3, a game which remains pretty much up in the air at the moment. Either way the game will be adding to the Nintendo 3DS’ library of games, which given its classic status should hopefully start attracting more players onto its platform. No word on how much the game will cost or when it will start rolling out to international markets, but assuming it does, it should not be too long after its Japan release.

The Guiding Light (Holography and moving microscopic matter)

... Manipulation of micrometer scale objects in three dimensions is possible because gradients in the intensity, phase and polarization of computer-generated holograms give rise to forces that can trap and move microscopic matter. These holographic optical tweezers are useful for assembling photonic devices to the possibility of true tractor beams that pull objects back to their source. Holographic optical trapping provides unprecedented control over the microscopic world. Holographic micromanipulation is complemented by holographic video microscopy, which creates volumetric images of three-dimensional systems in real time.  ...

“Water Printing” Application for the Decoration of Toys

The research results, carried out by AIJU, demonstrate the possibilities for this application technique within the personalized decoration of 3D pieces.

This technique will allow the decoration of a large amount of products with different geometric shapes in an efficient and versatile way. Moreover, after several baths, a 360º surface covering of the piece to be decorated can be achieved, with a good finish and that includes any small grooves the product could have. Besides, the decoration is homogeneous throughout the entire surface.

... Throughout its development, the applicability of Water Printing Technology in the decoration of scale cars has been observed, with several colors and designs, although other products could also be considered within this and/or other future activities.

Zen Pinball 3D on Nintendo 3DS: Who knew pinball could be peaceful?

We'll just come out and say it: Pinball on game consoles is almost always boring. .... That was what we thought before Zen Pinball 3D ($6.99 on eShop) by Budapest, Hungary-based Zen Studios.

While perhaps it wasn't intentional--it's just clever use of the studio's name, after all--Zen Pinball 3D can provide a zen-like experience when players simply forget about all of the points and awards and rankings. So, sit back, turn the 3D effect way up, and just tap those shoulder buttons for a surprisingly chill time with your 3DS.
