IMAX laser projector has Kodak origins

The IMAX/Kodak connection first was tied in October 2011, when IMAX signed a licensing agreement giving it exclusive rights to more than 50 Kodak patents covering laser projection technology.

IMAX also hired roughly 30 Kodak scientists and engineers who now work at IMAX's Rochester R&D site.

According to IMAX, the first movie to be screened on one of its laser projectors will be The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies, which opens Dec.17. Bonnick said the theater that will be converted to show a laser version has not yet been decided.

So far, IMAX has signed 67 deals around the world to install laser projectors in 2015 at venues such as the iconic TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood, the AMC Loews Lincoln Square in Manhattan, the Empire Leicester Square in London, and the Smithsonian Institution's three IMAX locations in Washington.
