Scientists think they’ve figured out the “uncanny valley” – why humanoid robots creep us out
Researchers from the university of California, San Diego, have discovered that a mismatch between movement and humanoid traits could be causing the uncanny valley effect, or the uneasiness we feel when we look at humanoid robots or CGI creations....The results suggests that the uneasiness we feel could be caused by a “perceptual mismatch between appearance and motion.” Basically, the brain seemed to negatively react like crazy when the robotic motions of the android didn’t match its human-like appearance. ...

Is there going to be an Avatar of 3D games? [Sony’s Mick Hocking interview]
Q: It sounds like quite a lot to take in, like it's more than something you can dump in over an afternoon and then - bam - it's 3D.
MH: There's definitely knowledge that you need to acquire, but the good thing is that developers tend to be extremely good at learning new things and they can pick it up very, very quickly once we start training them.
In terms of the investment, it's actually a very low to put great 3D into your game. In the last twelve months we haven't seen a team go above 2% of their dev budget, and a lot of them are about half a percent.
It's important to get it right. It's a new creative medium - it's not just 'add depth' - and you have to implement it as a new creative medium and understand what you're doing. But doing that doesn't take that long.

American Idol, Glee and Smallville cracked the top ten, even though they’re all in different echelons of Nielsen ratings. …

Media, entertainment companies ill-prepared for today’s digital opportunities, says study
According to the Accenture research, 91 percent of these media executives are failing to take full advantage of the data, leaving them ill-prepared to fully realize the revenue opportunities available from today’s digital technology.
Moreover, 95 percent of the executives surveyed said they do not have strong digital customer relationship management (CRM) capabilities. Fifty-eight percent said they are in the early stages of developing CRM capabilities.
The research, Accenture’s “Global Media & Entertainment High Performance Study,” found fewer than 10 percent of the executives said their companies have a fully integrated view of their digital consumers. This suggests the overwhelming majority of industry players must consider altering how their companies do business if they are to succeed in growing revenues in today’s digital landscape.
