L.A. Tourism Launches Virtual Reality Platform for Meeting Planners

For the first time, conference planners can now explore a wide range of event venues throughout a city in virtual reality and 360-degree video to help them design citywide events.

Meet L.A., which is part of the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board, launched the Virtual Discovery L.A. portal last week with more than 50 group spaces and gathering places showcased in immersive video.

Planners can now navigate digitally through many of L.A.’s iconic sites such as L.A. LIVE, Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Getty, and Warner Brothers Studio, and there are a couple dozen VR/360 videos showing all of the function spaces inside L.A. Convention Center.

The platform also takes viewers on neighborhood tours to scope out the graffiti murals in the Arts District, outdoor cafes in Hollywood Farmer’s Market, and the Tiffany store on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, among others.

A Chinese Lens on Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality

wearalitysky_phone_1200px600x600One of the hosts of the conference, ARinChina, brought me over along with a group of about a half-dozen Westerners. This media company connects a community of 60,000 developers, all of whom are invested in staying ahead of breakthrough technologies like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and the hybrid known as mixed reality (MR). The AR track where I presented was hosted by RAVV, a new technology think tank that is pulling together subject matter experts across robotics, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, VR and AR. RAVV is building an international ecosystem that includes its own approaches for startup incubation, knowledge sharing and other collaborative endeavors.

AR works best when it's invisible. - Snapchat and Pokemon

B2B will be a major driver of AR and MR. You know who most appreciates head-mounted displays? Professionals who work with their hands, need content delivered directly in front of them, and don't care about how they look.

Brands must constantly hone their value proposition. ... if a brand created an app that could use the camera to recognize stains and tell people how to clean them, any parent with young children at home would love it.

Some of the most important technical specifications are about the optics.  I got to try the new VR viewer from Wearality, a company run by optics pioneer David A. Smith.  The crispness of the screen, along with the breadth of the field of view, delivers a breakthrough in quality, especially for any device at a sub-$100 price point.

It takes a village, and a country, and a world. The goal of the Virtual Reality Summit wasn't just to show off cool gadgetry, though that was part of it. It was to pull together support for business development, content creation, financing, manufacturing, infrastructure, and hardware and software innovation. These are topics of interest for Gui'An in particular, which has quickly become China's big data capital.

Xiaomi beefs up its mobile virtual reality push with Mi VR

mi-vr_03-1The forthcoming Mi VR is going on more general release in China, priced at RMB 199 (~$30).

As with other such mobile VR headsets, it only works with Xiaomi’s smartphones — and is therefore tied to the company’s mobile market footprint. So don’t expect this to arrive in the US; Xiaomi will need to bring its smartphones to the market for that to be possible.

The Mi VR hardware includes a dedicated motion sensor and system-level optimizations for 16ms ultra-low latency, aimed at minimizing motion sickness (aka VR nausea). The headset also ships with the aforementioned 9-axis motion controller to support a wider range of interactions with content. VR content for the device is downloaded from Xiaomi’s app store.

Bloomberg: Daqri seeking $200M investment to develop augmented reality helmet

f5dc0afc2d09ca5324654ab7a539ed34

Dive Brief:

  • According to sources who Bloomberg characterized as "familiar with the matter," augmented reality company Daqri is discreetly looking for at least $200 million in private investment.
  • The company is reportedly in search of cash in order to further advance its $15,000 safety helmet product, which allows industrial workers to see a digital overlay on top of a real-life view of existing site conditions.
  • If Daqri manages to raise $200 million, that would mark one of the biggest investments ever into "young" fields like augmented and virtual reality. The Los Angeles-based company — which, according to Bloomberg, has been somewhat secretive about its efforts to raise capital — has previously said it raised $15 million in private equity in 2013.

AR as product design tool

spark-trifoldIn the EU-funded SPARK project, Prof. Cascini leads a consortium that uses light projectors to beam colour onto life-sized plaster casts of new products. Consumers can handle the casts to get a better feel for the final product and designers can alter their appearance in real time.

One challenge is for the light beam to follow the cast around the room without altering the image projected on its surface. To do so, an algorithm works out the position and orientation of each cast from beacons fixed to its extremities and adapts the image sent through the projector accordingly.

The highlight of the SPARK approach is that it manages to augment reality without using any screens. ‘This frees designers up so that they can focus on being creative,’ said Prof. Cascini.

5 Augmented Reality Trends

Here are 5 augmented reality trends that suggest the long term future of this emerging technology:

1. The AR market will grow fast.

Out of that $150 billion, AR will make up $120 billion of the market share. Considering that AR is just barely getting started in 2016, that means the next three years will be marked by explosive growth for the AR industry.

2. AR will primarily be mobile at first.

The publicized image of VR technology is the now classic image of a person with a face-masking technology nearly the size of their head, and many think of AR in a similar way. AR headsets are being developed, such as the Microsoft Hololens, but AR’s biggest market will be with mobile devices. One reason for this mobile-first market is that AR is already smartphone-compatible, meaning that users don’t have to buy new hardware to engage with the technology. Secondly, it’s a matter of convenience: consumers pull out their phone, turn on the camera, and get more information about the world around them by moving their phone through space. Whether it’s Google Tango or the iPhone 7’s dual cameras (which many point to being a precursor for future AR usage), mobile AR is already on its way, and for most cases, mobile AR is all that consumers need to fulfill their needs.

3. AR will change the face of marketing.

Part of the reason mobile AR will be so successful is because AR marketing depends on smartphones. Picture a world in which a logo designer’s work isn’t just on a billboard or a website; it could be digital graffiti anywhere in the world, giving brands greater exposure to their audience than ever before.

4. Enterprises will love AR.

There are numerous benefits for businesses using AR. These include service or maintenance professionals getting fed information about their work as they handle tasks, increased information flow between offices, and streamlined operations. AR could be used to augment meetings: during presentations, members could pull up additional information to lay over the documents as needed. There’s no doubt that AR will be popular among consumers, but it’s AR’s value in the business world that will make the technology so successful.

5. AR won’t be controlled by platforms.

Smartphones today are controlled by a handful of tech enterprises (Apple, Samsung, and Google), and the same will be true for VR technology, which is much more dependent on hardware than AR tech is. While AR will have its large platforms, including the Microsoft Hololens, Google Tango, and Magic Leap, there are also open source toolkits, such as the ARToolKit, to help developers build their own AR apps. This creates flexibility and innovation within AR and allows small businesses and even consumers to experiment with AR at a lower cost if they so choose.
