This Chinese Drama Cast an AI Actor and Some Viewers Couldn’t Tell the Difference, So Was It Worth It?

SUMMARY

  •  I Am Nobody is a refreshing blend of martial arts, mystical sorcery, and multi-tiered humor, offering a satisfying surprise for American audiences with its free availability on YouTube.
  •  The introduction of an AI-generated actress in the series sparks curiosity and intrigue, but her role is minor and not visually revolutionary.
  •  While AI innovation is making strides in the entertainment industry, I Am Nobody proves that human actors still play a crucial role and won't be replaced by computer creations anytime soon.

CES 2024: What we expect in Las Vegas this year

...

Displace made a splash at CES 2023 with its truly wireless TV that could be mounted anywhere, even suction-cupped to a window. The company’s demo left us with a lot of questions as it wasn’t yet ready to discuss key details of the product since what it showed off were CES-specific prototypes. The company is returning to Vegas this year and it’s already announced what it plans to have on display.

First, Displace says two sizes of TVs will be demoed: the 27-inch Displace Mini and the 55-inch Displace Flex. The display we saw earlier this year was also 55 inches, but a key difference between it and the Flex is that this new version attaches to an optional magnetic wireless charging stand. Both the Flex and the Mini pack enough battery life to last a month if you watch six hours of content per day, according to the company. There’s no pricing available for these yet, but they go up for pre-order on January 9, so we’re bound to find out soon. Displace said it will also show off a 110-inch model at CES, although details are scarce.

45 Second Western created in Midjourney and Runway

WESTERN SHORT MOVIE / Midjourney V6 + Runway Gen-2. Midjourney released their V6 beta yesterday so i figured out I could test it by making a short film exclusively with images I could generate over there. Since everybody is making Scifi and fantasy AI, I went with my favorite genre: western.

RIP Metaverse, Hello AI: An Entertainment Lawyer’s Predictions for 2024

...

In 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court reached a monumental decision holding that Andy Warhol’s painting of Prince infringed the copyright of the photograph it was based on. In 2024, keep an eye on how lower courts interpret and apply the 2023 Supreme Court decision, and expect that the fair use defense may be pared back significantly. With this, we may see significant impacts on cases involving the right of publicity that traditionally employed the “transformative” defense, which may be reversed, with the defense transitioning to question the actual new use of the image. ...

The best digital content innovations of 2023: ESPN’s alternate broadcasts, more

...

This year saw several different takes on live broadcasts catered to younger audiences and Millennial/Gen-Z nostalgia with the NHL’s Big City Greens Classic and ESPN’s Toy Story Funday Football. Other digital content innovations saw enhancements for how we watch games with the augmented reality in the ManningCast, as well as a team up between NFL+ and Genius Sports.

Here’s a look at those stories:

One of the biggest venues in the world for video art—Las Vegas’s Sphere delivers virtual reality (without the headset)

... It was a powerful experience—somewhere between the old-school pleasures of a planetarium and the immediacy of virtual reality (more thrilling without the headset!)—and nonetheless disorienting. ...

... it overnight became one of the biggest venues in the world for video art. (Exosphere, the name for Sphere’s exterior screen, is the perfect canvas for images of eyeballs or globes, but otherwise not as powerful.) ...

... only Brambilla and Devlin’s work were stylistically distinct enough to read as artworks. Brambilla stitched together over a thousand movie clips referencing Elvis and Vegas to create one of his characteristic scrolling video tapestries, the Bosch-like delirium of imagery being his recognisable signature at this point. And Devlin created an awe-inspiring digital tapestry featuring 26 hand-drawn examples of fantastic-looking but real species in Nevada on the verge of extinction, which grew from her Come Home Againinstallation in the gardens of the Tate Modern.
The other artworks were largely subsumed by the concert theatrics, Sphere being a great leveller of video art in much the way the internet is with photography. Who cares about authorship when a flood of stunning images is washing over you?...

The unexpected appearance of this night-time Vegas scene was probably the most powerful example of Sphere technology in action. Suddenly the band seemed to be playing in front of the real, blinking city skyline complete with its colour-shifting Ferris Wheel instead of in front a screen picturing such things. Out of some stubborn journalistic habit I asked who created that piece, and it turned out to be a team at George Lucas’s visual effects company Industrial Light and Magic. And there it was, the category that best describes Sphere’s leading video art and special effects alike, the condition that so much digital imagery today aspires to: magic.

Amazon’s new Echo Frames can’t touch the Ray-Ban Meta

...

Unlike the Ray-Bans, however, Amazon’s Echo Frames 3 don’t do video capture (you can practically hear the collective sigh of relief from privacy advocates across the globe). They do, however, offer a similar audio set up. The speakers are located in the temples, just ahead of the temple tips. ...

As their name implies, however, the real centerpiece here is Echo functionality. The Frames are yet another form factor for summoning Alexa. This makes enough sense on the face of it, a hands-free voice assistant you can take anywhere your phone gets a decent connection. You can play/pause, make calls and set reminders, for starters — all things you can do on a pair of earbuds with a connected voice assistant. ...

My feelings about the latest Echo Frames may well have been different had I not recently tested the Ray-Ban Meta. At $270, they’re $30 cheaper than the Meta glasses. If you’re attempting to decide between the two, I would say bite the bullet and spend the extra $30. Of course, it’s also worth factoring in that — as I write this — Amazon is currently offering the new Echo Frames for a deeply discounted $200.
