Yet Another 3-Screen Study: Alternative Platforms Are Additive

A majority of folks now have multiplatform video access, but they’re using second and third screens as an additive rather than as a primary viewing source, according to metrics from Arbitron and the Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement. The two paired up on a pilot program to analyze three-screen video consumption. Their findings bear out Nielsen’s most recent three-screen findings, as well as a those from the Television Bureau of Advertising:
“While a significant portion of the CIMM TV audience used PCs or Android/BlackBerry mobile devices to access the leading online video sites, broadcast and cable TV was by far the leading choice for video consumption in terms of aggregate time spent with TV and video sites across the measured three screens.”

MIT creates self-assembling 3D nanostructures, could be the future of computer chips

MIT has devised a way of creating complex, self-assembling 3D nanostructures of wires and junctions. While self-assembling structures have been made from polymers before, this is the first time that multi-layer, configurable layouts have been created, opening up the path to self-assembled computer chips.

Nintendo Announces The Wii U At E3

[Philip Lelyveld comment: this could be the framework for an in-theatre, massively multi-participant gaming and social experience, as well as a new class of 'third place' centers to compete with coffeeshops.]

...The Gamepad sports a pressure-sensitive touchscreen along with traditional buttons and directional pad. Nintendo also packed an NFC reader/writer and a gyroscope/accelerometer.

The Wii U will support two different Gamepads.

The new controller will allow for viewing multiple screens (one on the TV of course, and one on your Wii U Gamepad), which the company showed off at their keynote this morning at E3. For example, in PikMin3, the Gamepad will display a three-dimensional map, allowing for a little added perspective.

The company is also introducing MiiVerse, which Nintendo refers to as a Main Street for gamers. Each of your friends will be displayed there in avatar form, and you’ll be able to share screen images, send text messages, and display your recent scores within the bubble hovering above your Mii.

Eventually, you’ll be able to join MiiVerse from any web-enabled device including the 3DS. ...

Fred Wilson: Content owners, don’t fear the future

...  In a perfect world, Wilson said he’d like to see a system similar to a DNS registry in which content owners would register their content and make it available with rules in exchange for copyright enforcement. That’s the fair compensation for society already enforcing the rights of copyright holders, he said.

“If we have rules for TV, films, music, books, games we’d see an explosion of innovation. All sorts of services and business models could get created,” he said.

If the media companies don’t adapt, tech companies and entrepreneurs are showing an increasingly willingness to create their own content. Wilson pointed to the original programing YouTube is commissioning. He said that could be where the next big media hit is. ...

5 key takeaways from paidContent 2012

[Philip Lelyveld comment: Proposed projects at the USC Entertainment Tech Center will address the first four of these five topics.]

Data helps destroy containers, and that’s a good thing.

Digital storytelling is a native art.

Not all “media” are created equal.

Publishers have to sell their brands directly to consumers.

It’s time to toss CPM as a yardstick for online advertising success.

After Broadband: Imagining a Future When Connected Networks Are All-pervasive

...The occasion for the brainstorming was a day-long conference, "After Broadband: Imagining Hyperconnected Futures," held last month at Wharton's new San Francisco campus. It was jointly organized by the school's Mack Center on Technological Innovation and the Institute for the Future, located in Palo Alto.

... By mid-afternoon, it was time for the entire conference to reassemble to hear reports from each of the workshops. Judging from the presentations, it seemed clear that the discussions had all been as free-wheeling as those in the Social group.

For example, the scenario of the workgroup on "Management, Operations, and Analytics" was that "Big Data" could be used to dramatically improve corporate governance at large companies. The group explained: rank and file employees are now routinely connected to social networks and their interactions with those networks often reveal the sorts of things on their minds. A new breed of analytic tools can sift through those postings to get an aggregated sense of the mood inside a company. It might even obtain early warning signals when something is going wrong. The group was careful to stress that the idea shouldn't be taken too far. "We're not going to outsource the FBI to Facebook," said one member. ...

Fierce Competition

Some of the most provocative comments were provided by Bran Ferren, a Hollywood special effects veteran now with Applied Minds, which provides consulting services to businesses. Ferren predicted, for example, that in 250 years, traditional reading and writing will have ceased to be part of daily life, but will instead be a historic curiosity, much like Latin is today. Turning from the distant future to the present, he noted that on account of the Internet, many companies are facing their fiercest competition from firms that are not even in the same business, with newspapers and Google being but one of many examples. ...

Social TV Twice As Popular For Live Vs. Time-Shifted Viewing: Study

Viacom Research Finds Viewers Engage in Average Seven Social TV Activities Weekly

... The top request for content among social users is full-length episodes (88%), followed by sneak peeks of new episodes (75%), and behind-the-scenes extras (71%) and highlight clips (71%). The majority of TV socializers are interested in rewards with real value, like free merchandise or signed cast photos, Viacom found.

The leading source of discovery of social TV services is through search (38%), followed by social networks themselves (26%) and ads run on shows (22%).

Smartphones dominate the use of social TV apps at 82%, trailed by tablets at 18%, according to the Viacom study. For services that are delivered via websites and associated apps, 52% of usage occurs on smartphones or tablets, with usage on desktop or laptops at 48%.

For those that use "check-in" services, such as Miso or GetGlue, 71% check in to a show to let their friends know and 64% check in to let other fans of the show know.

The two-phase study involved 24 focus groups in Boston and San Diego with Viacom viewers age 13-52 who engage in social TV activities on at least a weekly basis, and a national online survey with more than 1,500 viewers aged 13-54.
